By Mulengera Reporters

In a wide-ranging interview on Tuesday, Oweek Robert Kasule Sebunya (who for many years served at Mengo as Kabaka’s Senior Minister & currently serves as Senior Museveni Advisor on Buganda issues) freely gave his views on the widespread anger the youths have towards Gen Museveni’s government, Robert Kyagulanyi’s chances to become President, the debate about the national flag usage and on the need for Uganda to be ruled by Presidents who do a maximum of 10 years.

He says having a rotational Presidency will enable every region of Uganda to produce a President and that will deepen patriotism and love for Uganda as every tribe or region will end up getting a chance to produce the Chief Executive for the country. Oweek Sebunya believes this will also engender equitable sharing of the national cake.

Oweek Sebunya, who for many years served as the Clerk to Buganda Lukiiko, also defended fellow Buganda elders and the two ex-Katikkiros who recently drove to Magere and had private talks with Bobi Wine. He said there is nothing with someone aspiring to become President, like Kyagulanyi, to seek ideas from elders among other clusters of society.

The senior citizen, who was interviewed from his residence near Rubaga Cathedral, also thanked Bobi Wine for being a proud Muganda from the Mbogo clan and for also making Ugandans from other parts of the country to understand that Buganda means well.

Oweek Sebunya, now aged 85 years and marries ex-VP Sekandi’s elder sister who departed a few years ago, commended Bobi Wine for reaching out to Ugandans in other parts of Uganda, something he said had deepened national unity and integration besides popularizing Buganda among people from other regions of Uganda.

He also spoke at lenght about how and why Baganda originally loved Gen Museveni a lot to the extent of recruiting him into their Nte/Cow clan. A Mutuba tree was also planted by the Nte clan head in honour of Gen YK Museveni.

Oweek Sebunya also agreed that the relationship between Museveni and the people in Buganda is currently not as cordial as it used to be, something he believes can only be cured through President Museveni humbling himself and listening more to the grievances of especially the young people in Kabaka’s region.

He also agreed with the Masaka Catholic Bishop Serverus Jjumba who recently called on Gen Museveni to deliberately listen to the angry and hungry young people of Uganda more as opposed to responding to them with teargas and Police brutality. Sebunya also agrees that Buganda sacrificed and contributed a lot to Gen Museveni’s coming to power and therefore deserves much more than has been the case thus far.

He thanked the young people for the love they spontaneously show to their Kabaka wherever he goes and for also enthusiastically participating in initiatives like Etoofali and Luwalo lwaffe which have enabled Charles Peter Mayiga (who he described as a very good leader) to ensure the Kabaka lives decently besides effecting many development projects in the Kingdom.

He also praised the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga for being such a good leader who listens to those he leads and who has kept getting better the more he keeps in Buganda Kingdom’s second apex office of Katikkiro. He also praised Mayiga for using words to motivate Kabaka’s people while demonstrating that, upon being mobilised, ordinary Baganda can willingly fundraise and develop their Kingdom while materially looking after their Kabaka even without Gen Museveni granting them their much-cherished Federal system of government.

Oweek Sebunya, who has been active in Uganda’s public life since the 1970s, also asked all Ugandans to eagerly look forward to the day a Muganda will become President of Uganda, a country in whose every citizen he predicted will be able to walk with pride and swag as a result of having rotational Presidents coming from different parts of the country.

The Oweek also seemed open to the day his country will return to perfect democracy whereby one won’t be able to be President for more than two terms each of 5 years.

He also explained why every Muganda youth should be proud of their nationality and surnames which are derived from their respective clans; making it clear that there is nothing wrong with every individual Ugandan being positively proud of his or her respective tribe.
