Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has unveiled a series of pledges aimed at improving maternal healthcare and safeguarding the rights of residents in mineral-rich areas.
Speaking at campaign rallies in Namutumba, Nondwe, Makutu, Busesa, and Idudi, Mafabi promised to provide free food for lactating mothers for six months, saying the intervention would support nutrition for both mothers and newborns.
He also committed to ensuring the consistent availability of mama kits, medicines, and other essential supplies in health facilities across the country.
Criticizing the current state of maternal healthcare, Mafabi noted that many expectant mothers, particularly in rural areas, are forced to purchase medical requirements, a situation he said contributes to preventable maternal deaths.
He assured supporters that such challenges would be addressed under his administration.
During the rallies, local leaders in Makutu Sub County, Bugweri District, raised concerns about rare mineral discoveries in the area.
They told Mafabi that the government’s silence had fueled fear and speculation among residents over potential displacement without adequate compensation.
In response, Mafabi pledged to fight for the rights of Bugweri residents, ensuring they receive fair compensation and benefit from mineral proceeds as stipulated by law.
He criticized the current government’s divide-and-rule tactics, which he said have left many Ugandans in poverty while a few enjoy comfort.
Mafabi also highlighted his broader vision for Busoga, citing the sub-region’s untapped natural resources, including lakes, as key drivers for job creation and economic development.
An economist and international advisor, he expressed confidence that Uganda can achieve broad-based growth under leadership that ensures national resources benefit all citizens.
Outlining the FDC manifesto, Mafabi emphasized economic empowerment by removing taxes on small and medium businesses, creating employment opportunities to reduce poverty, rehabilitating and equipping education and health institutions, and implementing policies to eradicate poverty.
Party president Patrick Amuriat Oboi called on the people of Busoga to use the upcoming general elections to change leadership and benefit from the FDC’s promises of better services.
Aspiring Bugweri District Chairperson candidate Ibrahim Ndhoga echoed concerns over the government’s handling of mineral discoveries, urging residents to vote for change to secure fair treatment.
