Brutally honest as always, former Kawempe South MP and respected political pundit Mubarak Munyagwa has revealed why he opted to form his own party as opposed to continuing to shelter under his mentor Dr. Kizza Besigye’s wings at Katonga where the newly formed Freedom Party/PFF is headquartered.

Munyagwa says that he still believes in Besigye’s leadership and the high political standards he brought to the way opposition politics is played in Uganda except that he had a slight disagreement with his seniors inside the KB orbit. That this related to how to relate with detractor political groups like Bobi Wine’s NUP.

Munyagwa says he is convinced that many in the NUP top leadership are not genuine about the opposition cause and that they are out to merely make money, deliberately divert, weaken and derail the broader anti-Museveni struggle. That because he is naturally a honest man, who doesn’t know how to pretend because of the requirement for leaders to be diplomatic sometimes, he would like to freely keep calling them out each time he gets a platform to do so.

However, colleagues in what has since morphed into PFF preferred caution as opposed to vigorously confronting the NUP leadership and calling it out for its hypocrisy. Munyagwa says that this is the only thing that caused a strategic and tactical point of departure of some sort between him and Dr. KB’s adherents at Katonga.

The colleagues at Katonga believe that even when some actors inside the NUP top leadership aren’t without blemish, going to war with them should be avoided at all costs because such confrontation can only strengthen the Museveni Junta, as they call it, as opposed to weakening it.

They are fearful that a fight, legitimate as it might be, can create plenty of bad publicity and thereby crippling the broader opposition cause besides exhausting and dispiriting millions of opposition supporters who have yawned and waited for regime change for an eternity.

Munyagwa asserts that: “There is no way I would be inside PFF and keep throwing missiles at those detractors of the opposition cause without seeming to be disrespectful and without getting into confrontation with many of those seniors at Katonga for whom I have nothing but respect.”

He says because they are all senior people with high commitment to the opposition cause, he is very sure the political relationship between him and the people at Katonga will continue even when he belongs to another political party of his own which will be launched in Kampala in a few days time. “I had to be in my own party from where I can keep exposing those detractors [shielding under NUP] without any of my seniors at Katonga being obliged to stop me from doing exactly that,” Munyagwa says.

He makes it clear that his support for Dr. Besigye will never diminish even they are in different parties “because I have consistently supported him since the year 2000 and that never diminished even when I was in SDP or DP when himself was in FDC.” He says that he is the hard-to-ignore political colossus he is today because of the genuine mentorship he got from Dr. Besigye over the years and he doesn’t know any other politician who is as authentic as Dr. KB.

Munyagwa is also intent at running for President in 2026 and says his messaging will be directed at exposing the Junta regime and its allies shielding under the opposition ranks. He says that he has a lot of intelligence on such detractors duping the population to be in opposition when in actual sense they are merely enabling the Museveni regime.
