How NWSC’s Quick Action Saved Canary Mugume, Other Clients from Paying Millions in Water Bills

NBS Television’s Canary Mugume has joined a growing list of Ugandans publicly praising the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) for its responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication to resolving customer concerns.
Mugume shared that he once came close to protesting what he thought were abnormal water bills last year. However, after following advice from another social media user, he invited NWSC to inspect his supply lines before taking any drastic action. The technical team discovered a leakage, fixed it promptly, and restored his billing to normal.
His remarks were in response to another client’s detailed testimony about a similar experience, where he recalled being shocked by a domestic water bill that had jumped from UGX 89,171 to UGX 4,475,158 in just two weeks. According to the client, NWSC staff calmly explained that while billing errors were possible, such a sudden spike was often caused by leakages after the meter, and the corporation sent a team that dug up pipes through the client’s parking lot, hence uncovering a massive leakage.
The fault was repaired immediately, water usage returned to normal, and the client was educated on how leakages after the meter are the responsibility of the customer, though NWSC has a committee that considers reasonable deductions in such cases.
Jackie Akampwera, CEO of Jada Coffee, also weighed in with her own experience, admitting she once accused NWSC of exaggerated billing, only for investigations to reveal a continuously running toilet in her premises, a problem she had never known could affect water bills. She now uses the lesson to educate her family and friends on spotting such issues.
NWSC has welcomed these public accounts as proof of the value of open engagement between the corporation and its clients. Officials have repeatedly urged customers to report any suspicious bills promptly so that the technical teams can investigate and resolve issues before they escalate.
The corporation maintains that such cooperation not only safeguards customer trust but also ensures fair billing and the efficient delivery of safe, clean water across Uganda.
