Equity Bank has launched the second edition of Abakyala Ku Ntiiko, a program aimed at empowering women running small businesses. This follows the success of the first edition in 2024.
Held in Kampala under the theme “Accelerating Action for Prosperity in Business,” the event brought together women entrepreneurs, financial experts, and industry leaders.
The program focuses on financial literacy, business financing, mentorship, and networking, helping women scale their businesses and overcome financial challenges.
Speaking at the event, Equity Bank Managing Director, Mr. Gift Shoko, encouraged women to embrace networking, saying,
“We believe that when women are financially empowered, they uplift families and communities as a whole.”
Laura Bahemuka, the bank’s Head of Micro Segment, highlighted the financial struggles women face due to multiple responsibilities and systemic challenges such as gender discrimination. She introduced Equi-Mama, a product designed to offer women financial planning, investment advice, insurance, and business support.
The event also featured success stories from women who benefited from last year’s program. Ms. Jane Nalubowa, a businesswoman, shared how the program helped her access affordable credit and grow her business, allowing her to employ more women in her community.
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, women own nearly 40% of small and medium-sized enterprises in Uganda. Recognizing their contribution, Equity Bank has supported over 400,000 women and youth with financial training, mentorship, and unsecured financing since 2021.
Following the launch in Kampala, Abakyala Ku Ntiiko will expand to Masaka (March 18), Iganga (March 21), Lira (March 25), and Kiboga (March 28). (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
