In his hey days, Damiano Lubega rose to become one of the most powerful men in DP. At some point he was the powerful Secretary General of the country’s oldest party and later on became the party’s organizing secretary. These were the days DP was the leading opposition party in Uganda and was clearly in number 2 after NRM. He was also the Rubaga South MP until 1996 when DP boycotted elections and CP’s Ken Lukyamuzi took advantage and grabbed the Rubaga South MP Seat. Subsequent efforts by Damiano Lubega to recapture the seat failed. He then relocated to his native Kyotera County where he stood in 2006, 2011 and was unsuccessful on both occasions. In 2006 he lost to NRM’s Pius Mujuzi and to Haruna Kasolo later on in 2011. Besides the politics of DP where he mentored many young people, Damiano Lubega was also a practicing lawyer in Kampala with chambers on Kampala road. Before politics and legal training, Damiano was also a teacher and he is a devout Catholic who greatly loved his DP party. His contemporary Sebaana Kizito died sometime back and, because he was unwell, Damiano was unable to participate in Sebaana’s funeral arrangements. However, his condition has lately worsened and he is confined to bed rest most of the time at his Rubaga residence. Reliable DP sources disclosed to this news website that elderly Damiano suffers from multiple ailments including cancer to which his other DP contemporary Sr Counsel Joseph Balikuddembe succumbed sometime last year. Damiano was very active in DP politics up to the mid-2000s when he served as organizing secretary under PK Semogerere. When he left the active political scene, he retreated to his law firm but occasionally also found time to advise and reconcile subsequent leaders like Sebaana, Norbert Mao and their internal rivals. We pray for elder Damiano to get well soon. For comments, call/text/whatsapp us on 0703164755.
