The Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer for Kampala District, Rashid Hasashya, confirmed the successful and peaceful conclusion of the first day of parliamentary nominations in the city.

He announced that day one had come to an end and that no more candidates would be attended to after the 5PM deadline.

Hasashya expressed gratitude to the media for their presence and support throughout the long day.

He noted that the nomination process had been concluded peacefully and emphasized the importance of working together with partners such as the media in carrying out the Commission’s work.

Providing a breakdown of the day’s nominations, Hasashya explained that eleven candidates had been nominated in Makindye East, five in Makindye West, four in Kawempe South, two in Kawempe North, two in Rubaga North, three in Rubaga South, eight in Nakawa East, one in Nakawa West, and eight in Central Division.

Additionally, two candidates had been nominated for the District Woman MP seat.

He reported a total of 46 candidates nominated on day one and reflected on whether this number was satisfactory.

Meanwhile, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango stated that the nomination exercise for Members of Parliament in the Kampala Metropolitan area had proceeded peacefully without major incidents.

He indicated that all candidates had followed the Electoral Commission’s guidelines and security instructions without fault.

Onyango also said that security agencies were strategically deployed to maintain order and deter disruptions, and that they would continue to do so throughout the exercise.

The nomination process is expected to continue over the coming days, with both the Electoral Commission and security forces urging continued cooperation from candidates, supporters, and the media.
