Airtel Money Uganda, in partnership with Mastercard, Diamond Trust Bank (DTB), and Network International, has launched a new virtual payment solution named the Airtel Money Global Pay Card. This innovative product allows customers to make online purchases directly from their mobile money accounts, bridging the gap between mobile money and global digital payments.
The Airtel Money Global Pay Card enables Ugandans to shop securely at over 100 million merchants across 200 countries. Available through the MyAirtel App, the virtual card provides a seamless way to pay for goods and services on international e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Netflix, and AliExpress—without requiring a traditional bank account.
Unlike conventional mobile wallet-linked payment methods, the Airtel Money Global Pay Card operates independently. Users can load only the amount they need, offering greater control over their spending.
Speaking at the launch, Airtel Money Uganda Managing Director Japhet Aritho emphasized the product’s global reach and its role in advancing financial solutions for Ugandans.
“In partnership with Mastercard, Diamond Trust Bank, and Network International, we are opening doors to global opportunities, enabling our customers to engage confidently in the expanding digital economy,” Aritho stated.
He highlighted Airtel’s commitment to secure transactions, noting significant investments in upgrading the MyAirtel App to provide a safe and user-friendly experience.
“Airtel’s investment in internet connectivity and enhanced security ensures that Ugandans can connect, transact, and do business in a secure, borderless way,” Aritho said. “Technological advancements require constant innovation, and we are proud to bring cutting-edge services to our customers.”
With over 16 million Airtel Money customers, Aritho believes the new virtual card will be a game-changer.
“This innovation ensures that anyone with a mobile phone can now access global markets and shop from anywhere in the world,” he added.
Godfrey Sebaana, CEO and Managing Director of DTB Bank, expressed confidence in the impact of the initiative, describing it as a step forward in financial inclusion.
“This partnership empowers Africa, allowing users to access a digital card without the need for a physical one. It’s a secure, robust solution that simplifies transactions and enhances financial inclusion,” Sebaana said.
Lenin Oyuga, Head of Telco Digital Partnerships for Mastercard, emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving digital adoption in Uganda.
“The growing use of digital transactions in Uganda highlights the need for innovative solutions like the Airtel Money Global Pay Card,” Oyuga stated. “We are confident that this card will offer Ugandans an exceptional digital experience.” (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
