The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has intensified its tax education campaign in Fort Portal, engaging landlords, property owners, school directors and business operators on tax compliance, proper financial record-keeping and the use of the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS).
The engagements are aimed at bridging tax knowledge gaps, promoting voluntary compliance and equipping taxpayers with practical knowledge to fulfil their tax obligations.
During a meeting with landlords and property owners, URA officials focused on rental income tax compliance, proper record-keeping, rental income declarations and applicable EFRIS requirements.
The authority emphasised the importance of transparency, timely fulfilment of tax obligations and voluntary compliance in supporting national development.
URA’s Tax Education team in the Midwestern Region also engaged school directors and education stakeholders on Pay As You Earn (PAYE) computations and withholding tax compliance.
Benjamin Sebunya, the Supervisor of Tax Education, highlighted the importance of tax knowledge in promoting compliance, while John Kiyaga, the Manager of Domestic Taxes, urged schools to formalise their operations and maintain accurate financial and employee records.
The engagement sought to address gaps in tax knowledge within the education sector and encourage institutions to meet their statutory obligations.
Meanwhile, EFRIS compliance took centre stage during a separate tax education engagement held at Nyaika Hotel in Fort Portal, where wholesalers, retailers, hardware operators, shop owners and depot operators were sensitised on the system’s requirements.
Led by Benjamin Senfuka, the URA team guided participants through EFRIS registration, service configuration and the process of stocking items in the system. The discussions also covered proper record-keeping, timely tax filing and payment, as well as the importance of fiscalising business transactions.
Senfuka said EFRIS helps align the transaction records maintained by the tax authority and those held by taxpayers, promoting transparency and accuracy in tax declarations.
“With EFRIS, URA and the taxpayer will have the same records,” Senfuka said, urging business operators to embrace the system and improve their record-management practices.
The engagements reflect URA’s continued efforts to strengthen tax awareness across different sectors, encourage businesses and institutions to maintain proper records, and improve compliance with Uganda’s tax requirements.
Through the initiative, the authority seeks to foster a culture of voluntary compliance while helping taxpayers understand and fulfil their obligations, ultimately contributing to domestic revenue mobilisation and national development.
