Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has taken the country’s development priorities to the international stage, holding talks with His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom and rallying global support for environmental conservation initiatives.

Nabbanja met King Charles during the launch of the Commonwealth Nature Initiative on the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda, where world leaders, government officials and business executives have gathered to strengthen international partnerships.

During the meeting, which was closed to the press, Nabbanja briefed the British monarch on Uganda’s development agenda, highlighting key areas where international support and investment are needed to accelerate the country’s economic transformation.

Among the major issues raised was the financing of Uganda’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a strategic infrastructure project expected to boost regional trade, improve transport connectivity and support economic growth.

Nabbanja also extended an invitation to King Charles to visit Uganda, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation between Uganda and the United Kingdom.

Beyond infrastructure and economic development, the Prime Minister used the Commonwealth platform to reaffirm Uganda’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources.

Addressing the Commonwealth Nature Initiative, Nabbanja called on the Commonwealth Secretariat and development partners to increase funding for nature-based initiatives, arguing that more than 70 per cent of Ugandans depend on nature and natural resources for their livelihoods.

She emphasized the need for collective action to protect ecosystems, conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development, noting that environmental conservation is directly linked to the economic wellbeing of millions of people.

The initiative received support from several Commonwealth leaders, including Australia’s Prime Minister, His Excellency Anthony Albanese, who, alongside other heads of government, expressed commitment to advancing nature conservation efforts.

Nabbanja’s engagements also extended to the Commonwealth Business Forum, which she addressed later in the day at the Antigua Cricket Arena. The forum, which was not open to the press, brought together business leaders and other stakeholders to explore investment opportunities and strengthen economic partnerships across the Commonwealth.

He r participation in the high-level engagements places Uganda’s development priorities, particularly infrastructure financing, investment mobilisation and environmental sustainability, within the broader Commonwealth cooperation agenda.

The 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is taking place from November 2 to 4 in Antigua and Barbuda under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

The meeting brings together leaders from 56 Commonwealth member states, representing nearly a third of the world’s population, at a time of significant global political and economic uncertainty.

The Commonwealth, whose membership spans Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific, provides a platform for member countries to pursue shared interests through diplomacy, trade, investment and development cooperation.

For Uganda, Nabbanja’s engagements at CHOGM present an opportunity to push for international partnerships that can support major infrastructure projects, attract investment and mobilise resources for environmental conservation.

As global leaders deliberate on the future of the Commonwealth, Uganda is seeking to ensure that its development ambitions and environmental priorities remain firmly on the international agenda.
