Beyond Language and Geography: T-Paul 256’s Journey from Kakoba to the World!

By Atwemereireho Alex (alexatweme@gmail.com)

Uganda’s music industry has a geography problem: talent is national, but recognition, investment and commercial opportunities have historically clustered around established entertainment centres. For artists from western Uganda, the challenge is not merely to make good music; it is to persuade an industry accustomed to familiar linguistic markets that Runyankole can travel as far as Luganda or English. T-Paul 256 is challenging that imbalance, blending contemporary sounds with the language and cultural identity of Ankole. His journey raises a question larger than personal fame: can Uganda build a music industry in which talent from every region has a fair opportunity to be heard, developed and rewarded?

Born Paul Taremwa in Kakoba, Mbarara City, he grew up in a family shaped by education, service and communication. His late father, Felix Basiime Bandeeba, was a journalist, editor and writer who died in 2021, while his mother, Kyomuhendo Anitah Peninah, worked as a nurse. This family background adds a personal dimension to his story. He is not simply a musician pursuing recognition; he is also a son building his own legacy while carrying the memory of a father whose professional life centred on words, ideas and storytelling.

His early experiences in church choirs and bands helped cultivate his voice and confidence. He later studied Accounting at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, completed an internship and worked as a banking assistant at Ankole Farmers and Traders SACCO. Yet music continued to draw him. Choosing to pursue it professionally meant accepting uncertainty, but it also demonstrated that conventional education and creative ambition need not be mutually exclusive. His accounting background could prove valuable in an industry where financial discipline and business knowledge often determine whether talent becomes a sustainable livelihood.

His father’s memory finds a particularly poignant expression in Tusingwiire, a rendition dedicated to him. Originally performed by Akayo Singers, the song carries themes of family, perseverance, faith and hope through difficult times. By revisiting it in his father’s honour, T-Paul turns music into an act of remembrance. It connects personal grief to a shared cultural language of gratitude and resilience, reminding audiences that behind the performer is a son whose ambitions remain intertwined with family history and loss.

His catalogue traverses the emotional landscape of everyday life. Otariwe and Butabika helped introduce his voice to audiences, while Secretly, Cheri, My Woman, Wanchekecha, Ekirabo and Far Away explore affection, attraction, admiration and longing. Muninkini (Choice) evokes the significance of choice in relationships; Ekimuri Rose draws on floral imagery to suggest beauty and affection, while Tamu Tamu evokes sweetness and romantic delight. Nyamunyonyi, meaning “little bird,” uses an affectionate image associated with a beloved person. Commando and Ninja bring a more energetic, assertive character to the catalogue, while Mama Rhoda adds a personal touch. Embabazi Zaawe Yesu turns towards Christian faith, gratitude and divine grace. Together, these works demonstrate how Runyankole can express modern love, personal ambition, faith and experiences that connect people across cultures.

Collaboration has broadened his musical reach. Nsi Nsamba with Sheebah Karungi blends Runyankole, Luganda and English with contemporary Afrobeat and zouk influences, connecting regional identity with a wider audience. Sawa Sawa with Lydia Jazmine, Nyamunyonyi with Ray G and Love Season with Jamal Wasswa bring different audiences and musical sensibilities into his work. Other partnerships include Rukundo with Rickman Manrick, Enafuya (Remix) with Zafaran, Bedroom (Remix) with Harmonize, Commando with Heli Baibe and Ninja with MC Shukran. These partnerships create opportunities for creative exchange, audience expansion and market access. The collaboration with Ray G is particularly relevant to western Uganda’s contemporary music movement, while the Sheebah partnership illustrates how a regional language can cross linguistic boundaries without losing its identity.

A significant milestone came on Friday, 22 August 2025, when he staged his Kampala concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval. The event drew a large crowd, with reports describing the venue as packed to capacity. Guest appearances included Ray G, Truth 256, Lydia Jazmine and The Ben from Rwanda. The concert was more than a performance outside his home region: it challenged the assumption that an artist strongly identified with Runyankole music must remain commercially confined to western Uganda. Lugogo offered evidence that a regional musical identity could attract substantial interest in the capital. The next challenge was to turn that moment into sustained audience growth, stronger distribution and a lasting national presence.

The wider significance of his journey lies in its challenge to Uganda’s musical geography. Runyankole is not merely a language for local audiences; it is a vehicle for storytelling, innovation and commercial possibility. Artists from western Uganda need consistent media exposure, professional management, reliable distribution, intellectual-property protection and investment in live performance. Mbarara and other regional cities should be recognised as creative hubs capable of producing artists, hosting major events and supporting livelihoods for musicians, producers, dancers, designers and event professionals. A more inclusive music industry would benefit not only performers but also the businesses and communities connected to their work.

His Kakoba Boy Live in Concert at Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara, scheduled for 24 October 2026, represents a critical stress test for Western Uganda’s creative industry. Beyond its immediate celebratory value, the event’s true significance lies in its execution and outcomes: the depth of audience engagement, the rigor of technical and vocal delivery, the efficiency of site logistics, and the tangible commercial value created for the local enterprise ecosystem. The ultimate measure of the concert extends far past a single evening’s attendance; it rests on whether regional stadiums can be transformed into viable, recurring infrastructure for talent capitalization and economic growth, rather than remaining episodic moments of cultural spectacle

Artistic ambition must also be matched by sound business practice. Copyright ownership, songwriting credits, master recordings, publishing rights, licensing, royalties and management agreements determine whether musicians receive fair returns from their work. Digital platforms can connect Runyankole music with listeners across continents, but availability does not guarantee visibility or income. Consistent releases, distinctive presentation, strong live performances, strategic partnerships and financial discipline will be essential to building a lasting career.

Ultimately, this is a story about cultural confidence and the determination to build something meaningful from home. From Kakoba, Paul Taremwa is taking Ankole’s language and musical identity into a wider national conversation. His tribute to his father adds personal depth; his collaborations demonstrate the value of artistic partnerships; and his Lugogo concert showed that his audience could extend beyond his home region. The next stage requires continued musical growth, professional discipline and the ability to turn recognition into enduring audience connection.

Uganda’s cultural influence will not be measured by how closely its musicians imitate established markets, but by how successfully they present their own stories to the world. A Runyankole song need not surrender its identity to travel; it needs compelling artistry, effective distribution and audiences willing to listen. The journey from Kakoba to the world is therefore more than one musician’s pursuit of fame. It is a test of whether Uganda can recognise the value of its cultural diversity and give every distinctive voice a genuine opportunity to flourish.
