Being the Rushenyi County MP, deep-voiced legislator Naomi Kabasharira travelled to the village for Easter. She left her ailing husband Maj John Kazoora at their home in Kigo.
Maj Kazoora, not comfortable travelling having been weakened by medication he had been on for years, stayed home with her second born son, two cousins and a nurse who for years had been by his side to administer medication for the terminal illnesses he was suffering from.
On Easter Sunday, he woke up well and after lunch, he opted to pass time around by playing cards (matatu) with his son and the other two cousins. The nurse also took part in the same.
As they played, Maj Kazoora all of a sudden felt unwell and excused himself to go and rest. He said he was feeling dizzy and the boys aided him to go rest in his bed.
With him resting or lying on the bed, the boys came back to resume their matatu. An hour later, at 6pm something, the nurse was to administer some medication to him. His son was sent to go to his bed, wake him up and prepare him for the medication session as the nurse prepared.
It was him, his second born son, who established that Major John Kazoora had rested. He tried to wake him up and there was no response. That’s how it was realized, established and confirmed that he was gone forever. Never to wake up again.
Even when he had been ill, not many of his close persons believed he would be gone on Easter Sunday. That early. That soon. That unexpected. Otherwise his wife Naome Kabasharira wouldn’t have travelled to Ntungamo. His oldest son too, who lives in Mbuya and works with Uganda Prisons, would equally not have travelled to Kashari to have Easter with people there.
On Easter Monday, several friends and close acquaintances gathered at Maj Kazoora’s home in Kigo (where he relocated with Naome after surrendering the Mbuya home to his grown up sons) for vigil of some sort even in the absence of the body which is in the funeral home of A-Plus.
Gratefully, on Tuesday the casket was wheeled into the deceased’s home at Kigo where mourners including Speaker Anita Among who was accompanied by several MPs including Asuman Basalirwa, James Kakooza and a few others. Flanked by Miria Matembe and her husband, Naome Kabasharira the widow was at hand to receive them for the vigil session that was emceed over by Winston Katushabe, a Commissioner at the Works Ministry.
Then people at the Easter Monday vigil, of the preceding day, included Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Miria Matembe and Mzee Nuwe Amanya Mushega. The trio eulogized Major John Kazoora. On Tuesday, a bigger vigil was organized at which a larger number of high profile speakers were expected to address mourners.
Major Kazoora’s son with Naome Kabasharira, who lives in Canada and works with Emirates, is expected to jet into the country Wednesday early morning and head straight to All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero where he will join others for the requiem mass which begins at 9am and has to be ending by mid-day to enable the Church carry on with other programs. He will be buried in Rutooma Kashari Mbarara district on Thursday starting from 10am. From Church, the casket will be driven to Kashari straight.
