The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has urged Buliisa District Local Government officials to strengthen tax compliance by ensuring accurate tax declarations, timely filing and payment of tax obligations, and proper use of the Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS).
The call was made Tuesday morning during a stakeholder engagement between URA’s Public Sector Office and Buliisa District Local Government, bringing together Chief Administrative Officers, accountants, procurement officers, Human Resource officers, as well as officials from divisions and sub-counties.
Sandra Namatovu, Supervisor of the Public Sector Office – Local Government, said local governments continue to make errors when initiating payments through IFMS, particularly when selecting pay groups and tax types.
“There are common mistakes made by the local government, for example wrong initiations while choosing pay groups and tax types on IFMS,” Namatovu said.
She cited instances where Customs dues or Other Non-Tax Revenues (ONTRs), such as Local Service Tax, are incorrectly initiated as Pay As You Earn (PAYE), while Withholding Tax (WHT) or other URA tax obligations may also be wrongly applied.
URA said accurate classification and initiation of tax obligations on IFMS is important to ensure that payments are correctly processed and government revenues are properly accounted for.
The authority encouraged Buliisa officials to improve accuracy in tax declarations, meet filing and payment deadlines, and strengthen internal processes to minimize errors and promote compliance.
The engagement formed part of URA’s efforts to work with local governments and other public sector institutions to improve understanding of tax obligations and promote effective revenue administration.
