The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has intensified tax education campaigns targeting business owners, landlords and property managers in Paidha, Soroti and Moroto, focusing on tax registration, payment procedures and the use of digital systems to improve record-keeping and compliance.
In Paidha, Nebbi District, URA’s Tax Education and Domestic Taxes (DT) teams are conducting door-to-door engagements with business owners to explain their tax obligations and address concerns that may hinder voluntary compliance.
The teams are guiding eligible taxpayers on registration and payment procedures while providing clarification on the taxes applicable to their businesses.
The door-to-door approach allows URA officials to engage directly with entrepreneurs at their business premises, respond to questions and help taxpayers understand the requirements relevant to their operations.
The campaign forms part of the authority’s efforts to bring tax information and services closer to businesses and encourage compliance through taxpayer education.
In Soroti District, URA has focused on landlords, property owners and other real estate stakeholders, educating them on the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS) and their tax obligations in the property sector.
During the engagement, officials highlighted the importance of maintaining accurate and accessible records as rental portfolios expand.
They noted that relying on notebooks and informal record-keeping methods can become increasingly difficult as landlords acquire more properties and manage larger numbers of tenants.
EFRIS, they explained, provides a digital system that can help businesses maintain organised records of transactions, including tenant payments, making information easier to retrieve when needed.
Participants were taken through the EFRIS registration process, the issuance of electronic receipts and invoices, and the tax obligations associated with rental income and property transactions.
The engagement was intended to help property owners understand how digital records can support business management while enabling them to meet their tax responsibilities.
URA also conducted a sector-based tax education campaign in Moroto District, targeting real estate operators, including landlords and property managers, on the use of EFRIS.
Officials used the session to clarify misconceptions about the system, emphasising that EFRIS is a business management tool rather than a new tax.
They explained its practical benefits, outlined the registration process and discussed rental income tax obligations applicable to property operators.
The officials encouraged participants to understand the requirements relevant to their businesses and use appropriate record-keeping systems to support accurate tax declarations.
Participants welcomed the initiative, saying the practical session helped clarify misconceptions about EFRIS and demonstrated how the system could simplify business management.
The engagements in Soroti and Moroto reflect URA’s focus on helping property owners understand the relationship between reliable transaction records, rental income declarations and tax compliance.
For landlords managing multiple properties, accurate records can help track payments, organise business information and establish a clearer picture of income generated from rental activities.
The campaigns also highlight the different approaches URA is using to reach taxpayers, from door-to-door engagements with business owners in Paidha to targeted sector-based training for real estate operators in Soroti and Moroto.
While the activities address different groups, they share a common objective of improving taxpayers’ understanding of their obligations and making compliance easier through accessible information and practical guidance.
Through these engagements, URA is seeking to promote voluntary tax compliance by helping businesses and property owners understand registration requirements, payment procedures, digital invoicing and the importance of maintaining accurate records.
The authority’s education initiatives place emphasis on direct interaction with taxpayers, giving them opportunities to ask questions, clarify requirements and better understand how tax rules apply to their daily business activities.
