The Pastor & The Crown: A Question of Conscience
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

By Gilbert Sammy Armado
Tomorrow, a pastor and his wife are to be coronated as King and Queen. The occasion calls not only for celebration but also for reflection on the responsibilities that come with the crown.

African kingship is not merely ceremonial. An Omukama (King) is expected to preserve, protect and promote the cultural identity, traditions and institutions of his subjects.
Yet some traditional practices, rituals and taboos may conflict with Christian teachings.

This raises a legitimate question of conscience for the Omukama designate.

If, as a pastor, he has previously stood on the pulpit teaching that certain African rituals, beliefs and traditional practices are contrary to the Christian faith, what happens when the responsibilities of the crown require him to uphold or participate in aspects of the very culture that Christianity has sometimes condemned?

Has his understanding changed?

If so, Is he prepared to explain that change to those he once preached to?

And if his convictions have not changed,

How does he intend to fulfil the cultural obligations of an Omukama without compromising the teachings he has professed as a pastor?

My question is:
Can one person simultaneously serve two institutions whose expectations may, at certain points pull in opposite directions—the Christian Church with its theological doctrines, and the traditional Kingdom with its customs, cultural obligations and indigenous institutions?

This is not an argument against a pastor becoming a King, nor an attack on Christianity or African culture.

It is a question of consistency, conscience and clarity of duty.

A King cannot selectively embrace his culture when convenient and reject it when it conflicts with his religious convictions.

Likewise, A pastor cannot simply set aside teachings he has consistently preached without explaining why his understanding has changed.

The crown therefore demands an honest answer:

Will the pastor serve the throne according to the cultural traditions and obligations of his subjects, or continue to place his ecclesiastical convictions above those obligations?

And if the two come into conflict, which conscience will guide the King? (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
