Water supply challenges will soon be history in the towns of Kamwenge, Mityana and Mubende following the completion of a number of projects undertaken by National water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). Led by the able, committed and hardworking Managing Director Eng Dr Silver Mugisha and Board Chairperson Eng Dr Badru Kiggundu, the water utility, one of the most efficient government agencies, NWSC is working very hard to ensure that the people in the three towns get a stable and reliable supply of clean and safe water.
The new works are in addition to the ones completed in recent years In Kamwenge, NWSC laid 127km of pipe in 2018/19, 86km in 2019/20 and 15km in 2020/21. In Mityana, NWSC laid 150km of water mains under the Service Coverage Acceleration Programme. The Corporation also undertook water extension works to Tamu Division in Mityana. These works included the construction of a 162,000-litre reservoir tank, a booster station, laying of a 12km pumping main, and power extension to the booster station.
Other works include: drilling of motorized borehole sets to provide an alternative water source in Mityana, feasibility studies on the Nakatongoli catchment with the aim of improving water quality in Mityana, and installation of public water points in 132 villages out of 164 in Mityana. The NWSC board and management team were pleased that completed works in Mityana had so far hugely improved the quality of life in the Municipality.
During service assessment tours in Kamwenge, Mityana and Mubende during which NWSC Board boss Eng Dr Kiggundu led colleagues such as George Runge, Rt Col Stephen Basaliza, Canon Josephine Kasya, Eng Joseph Eyatu, Racheal Mbabazi, Sarah Onyiru and Edith Kateete, the Chairman also revealed that in addition to the above works, the corporation was, in partnership with Kamwenge stakeholders, working on a project to serve Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement Camp.
He also listed other interventions as the Bigodi Water Project, Kitonzi and Kambambiro Water Projects in collaboration with Water for People and Bishozi Water Supply Improvement Project, working closely with UNHCR.
The Director Engineering services at NWSC, Eng Alex Gisagara, listed the completed and ongoing projects meant to improve supply in Mubende. He noted that NWSC has laid a total of 114.9km of water mains to serve over 30 villages in Mubende, installed 171 public stand pipes, and increased water production capacity. He added that the Corporation was currently laying 16km of water mains to Lusalira and 8km to Ntungamo-Mubende. Furthermore, NWSC is currently extending 5km of mains to Nkandwa and 4km to help serve the people in Musozi.
During the tour, Deputy Managing Director Board Affairs and NWSC Corporation Secretary Edith Kateete emphasized the corporation’s commitment towards water for all in all its areas of operation, and explained that the tours help the board record feedback from the utility’s customers and assess the progress of service delivery projects being implemented across the country.(For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994, 0779411734, 0200900416 or email us at mulengera2040@gmail.com).
