In a leaked memo to colleagues in the NGO/CSOs fraternity, Richard Sewakiryanga inadvertently exposes the extent to which things have gone wrong in the Civil Society Movement renowned for being very critical of government. He is evidently addressing his mind on the recent media reports pointing to existence of chaos in the NGO fraternity.
The 12th June memo is clearly in response to articles Mulengera News has previously published implying existence of rival factions in the Ugandan NGO fraternity. In the 4 page memo, the NGO Forum Executive Director endeavors to make himself understood on a number of things including widely-held suspicion that bad blood exists between him and colleagues like Arthur Larok and Nicolas Opio.
He also refers to his relationship with donor agencies and also sheds light on the circumstances under which Nicolas Opio ceased to be board chairman for the NGO Forum which unites many NGOs.
Sewakiryanga also explains circumstances under which Arthur Larok’s Action Aid International ceased to subscribe to the membership of the NGO Forum which he has headed as ED for the last 10 years. He also discusses circumstances under which his contract came to be extended for another four years contrary to what equally senior colleagues in the NGO fraternity wished.
Reading Sewakiryanga’s missive, one gets the impression the worst is yet to befall the NGO fraternity that is clearly now facing undeniable turmoil. The leaked memo is self-explanatory and we hereby reproduce it in its original form:
