Party National Treasurer General Mary Babirye Kabanda (also woman MP Masaka) confirms DP recently got some good money and bought a complete building in one of the city suburbs which will serve as party headquarters.
She confirms the party will glamorously move into its own home in the newly acquired city building in August this year and there will be a pompous ceremony to mark this huge milestone in the history of Uganda’s oldest political party which started 65 years ago.
Despite having an undeveloped plot in Mengo near Kabaka njagala road, DP has for an eternity been operating in rented premises including the current City House which owner Sudhir Ruparelia gave them to occupy for free after the party proved too poverty-stricken to make prompt rental payments.
Reliable sources say the party is currently doing renovations and branding the new place in it’s colors ahead of the grand ceremony in August.
But there is anxiety regarding the source of the money as the funder remains unknown to ordinary party members who are only being told to prepare for party and merrymaking in August when the party headquarters will be relocating leaving City House to house the party’s Kampala branch headed by veteran journalist Vincent Mayanja.
The record-breaking acquisition of the party permanent headquarters will be part of current party President Norbert Mao’s enduring legacy and its something that could improve his chances at getting reelected as DP President General and eventually Presidential candidate for the DP Bloc for the 2021 elections.
There is a fringe section of DPs who are uncomfortable with Mao’s 2021 candidature seeing him as a spoiler against Bobi Wine Kyagulanyi Sentamu. But Mao’s acquisition of the permanent headquarters for the party (something his predecessors Ben Kiwanuka, PK Semogerere and Sebaana Kizito didn’t do) will most likely silence such pro-Bobi critics as the oracle from Gulu will now be seen as an achiever of unprecedented accomplishments.
