Minister of ICT and National Guidance Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba and Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo have challenged researchers and innovators to turn research into practical, market-driven solutions capable of addressing Uganda’s development challenges.
Speaking at the opening of the 10th National Conference on Communications (NCC 2026) at Makerere University, Lumumba said research must move beyond institutional shelves and laboratories to influence policy, improve public services and create tangible value for Ugandans.
“Research is not a luxury, it is the foundation of progress,” Lumumba said, while calling for responsible innovation that addresses both the opportunities and risks associated with digital technologies.
She highlighted emerging challenges including cybercrime, online abuse and child exploitation, saying research and innovation must help Uganda harness digital technologies while safeguarding citizens.
The conference was held under the theme “Accelerating Market-Driven Research and Innovation for Uganda’s Development.”
UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo similarly urged researchers, academia, industry and policymakers to ensure that research translates into solutions that can be applied in communities and markets.
Thembo said the conference provides a platform for dialogue, collaboration and knowledge-sharing across Uganda’s communications and ICT ecosystem.
He also highlighted UCC initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of innovators, including the Secondary School ICT Club Competition, whose national finals feature eight teams presenting technology-based solutions to real-world challenges.
The two-day conference, organised by UCC in collaboration with Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), brings together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and innovators.
Discussions are focusing on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, digital infrastructure, skills development and industry-academia collaboration, alongside exhibitions showcasing locally developed technologies and research.
Thembo said UCC remains committed to creating an environment that supports responsible adoption of emerging technologies and stronger collaboration between government, academia and the private sector.
The conference marks the 10th edition of NCC, with organisers seeking to strengthen the connection between research, innovation and Uganda’s broader socio-economic development.
