In a powerful show of love and humanity, members of the Tusakimu Club on Thursday turned Mapeera Bakateyamba’s Home in Nalukolongo into a place of joy, music and renewed hope.
The good-hearted group spent the whole day with vulnerable elderly residents, bringing not only smiles but also food items, home essentials, and warm company.
The emotional visit kicked off with a holy Mass led by Rev. Fr. Charles Mpiima, filling the home with prayer and thanksgiving.
After the service, the visitors and residents enjoyed a cheerful luncheon, sharing stories, laughter and heartfelt moments.
Reverend Sister Maria Matilda Nakiyaga, the Assistant Administrator of the home, expressed deep gratitude, saying such visits give them the energy they need to carry on their heavy daily duties. She revealed that the home, which is now 40 years old, had *never* been renovated until Tusakimu Club stepped in and took full responsibility for giving it a new look.
She praised the group for transforming both the men’s and women’s quarters, which are still under renovation.
Sr. Nakiyaga also shared the tough reality they face: caring for elderly people is not easy, especially because 90% of the residents require diapers.
The home uses up to 6 or 7 packs every month, making support from kind visitors extremely important.
She noted that Tusakimu Club is the second group to visit this week, after the Mengo Elderly Department delivered a Christmas package on Wednesday.
The home currently accommodates 60 helpless elders but expects to expand to 100 once renovations are complete.
Peter Mukungu Ssentale, the Chairman of Tusakimu Club, said the club—made up of 40 men and their wives—was formed to help needy people.
This year they chose Bakateyamba Home; next year they will visit Sanyu Babies Home of the Church of Uganda and the following year a Muslim institution, ensuring fairness across faiths.
He called on individuals, companies, and organizations to donate whatever they can so that vulnerable people can also enjoy the spirit of Christmas.
