As a group of Mathias Mpuuga supporters led by NBS scribe Simon Njala Kaggwa conspicuously lost ground to the Kyagulanyi squad that was being led and commanded by Wakiso LC5 Chairman Matia Lwanga Bwanika and Muwanga Kivumbi, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago secured some very important yet unexpected public endorsement for his 2026 reelection.
This was at Nkumba along Entebbe Road where hundreds of people converged for fallen ex-DP President PK Ssemogerere’s last funeral rites recently.
As can be expected, the event was attended by many political heavy weights given PK Semogerere’s role in directly mentoring many of contemporary Uganda’s opposition leaders including Kizza Besigye, Betty Nambooze, Erias Lukwago and others.
Aided by organising committee members like Counsel Sam Muyizzi and Jude Mbabali, the pro-Kyagulanyi squad managed to prevail and obliterate the Mpuuga camp members who naturally must have expected to find some favorable platform after the Mohammed Segirinya burial debacle in Kaddugala Masaka of the preceding weekend.
Kyagulanyi’s NUP slogans and colors dominated and, left with no option, the day’s MC gave a lot of priority and prominence to Muwanga Kivumbi who had just been made NUP Deputy President for Buganda region, a job which previously belonged to Mpuuga.
The Kivumbi group quickly took charge enabling NUP colors and slogans to dominate as if PK Semogerere (who only loved and professed DP all his entire life) was a member of the National Unity Platform.
As they licked their wounds, the few surviving DP members present coalesced around Buikwe South MP Lulume Bayiga who sat quietly somewhere in one of the VIP tents. Many blamed Lulume and a few DPs present, plus PK’s family members, for merely looking on as the Muwanga Kivumbi-commanded NUPians overwhelmed everyone and dominated the event.
WASAJJA BACKS LUKWAGO:
But the other big news from the event was the speech that was delivered by Prince David Wasajja, Kabaka Mutebi’s young and most trusted brother. In fact, this was Kabaka’s speech which the prince only delivered since cultural norms prohibit the King from personally attending such events.
Wasajja, understood to be among those who were discomforted with the very embarrassing social media activism NUP foot soldiers engaged in discussing the King’s health, praised the late PK Semogerere.
Kabaka’s brother, who is very influential at Mengo where he actually works in Bulange, praised the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago for being one of the few politicians present at the Nkumba event who are lucky to posses Semogerere-like credentials.
Wasajja remnisced that PK Semogerere was principled, public-spirited, decent and soft-spoken yet very strong in his beliefs. That PK was a very calculative politician who always chose his allies and political battles carefully, an attribute the Prince said he and the Kabaka see in Erias Lukwago.
He celebrated the Lord Mayor as a civil and honest politician who never engages in stabbing political allies and fellow leaders in the back. He also commended Lukwago for being a measured politician who plays mature politics of never treating political foes as enemies.
Wasajja added that Erias Lukwago, who was directly mentored by PK Semogerere, has also always exhibited political restraint, incorruptibility, genuine committment to the ordinary man’s social justice issues and maturity even when faced with very provocation and very tempting situations.
Wasajja’s generous comments and referencing about the indomitable politician from Kabungo village was construed by many of the people present to be a veiled endorsement for his 2026 reelection to carry on as the People’s Lord Mayor for Kampala City.
