It’s official that the Mazongoto singer aka Dr. Hilderman Kiyaga is having his eyes on Mawokota North MP Seat which Minister Amelia Kyambadde has patronized since 2011. Back then she acrimoniously removed Peter Mutuluza. Kiyaga was a key component of her strategy against Mutuluza who wasn’t an easy one to overcome. He composed for her a hit song entitled “Amelia” which was like the anthem of her campaign. Mutuluza grumbled and moved on. The alliance between Amelia and Kiyaga, however, didn’t last. Knowledgeable sources say Amelia forgot the singer and stopped taking his phone calls after 2 years in Parliament and consequently they didn’t talk up at all after early 2013. He would call and she wouldn’t pick. He would even go to her office as Trade Minister but her assistants would deny him audience. On lucky days when he rang, Amelia’s assistants would pick the phone and talk to him discourteously. They would contemptously demand that he tells them what the issue is as the Principal would be too busy to get his time. Whereas many misunderstood him saying she paid him a lot of money to do the Amelia song in 2011, Kiyaga was actually not paid even a penny. He was always concerned with high poverty levels in Mawokota and when she offered to run he saw an opportunity to transform the poor communities of Mawokota. “He was so excited having direct contact with somebody who had become so powerful in Museveni’s circles as PPS and stormed the studio and did the song unprompted. He was full of expectations and never believed she would turn her back on him,” said a local leader in Mawokota. It’s said Kiyaga frequented her office as Minister not because wanted personal assistance. He would be carrying investors with business ideas for Mawokota and other parts of Uganda in order to boost job creation and uplift the poor. All they wanted was being guided on how to benefit from some of the government incentives like tax reliefs and other subsidies. Being ignored and bounced at the trade ministry frustrated Kiyaga and made him feel humiliated. He eventually gave up on Amelia and resorted to minding his business. “The young people started attacking him saying you are the one who introduced this woman to us saying she was going to link us to opportunities and economically transform our area but there is nothing,” the young voters would attack Kiyaga. They would demand that they call back Mutuluza or find someone else to oust Amelia in 2016. When Grace Kansiime came, word went around that Kiyaga was among those fielding her to revenge against Amelia. She looked for him and hosted him to her residence in Old Kampala. He was there the whole day & Amelia was joined by her husband Wilson Kyambadde. They had lunch and talked over their differences and the couple begged Kiyaga not to publicly embrace Kansiime. He kept the gentleman’s agreement and kept a low profile throughout the campaign period. There was hope that Amelia, who struggled to overcome Kansiime, would learn some lessons and become a better leader in this 2nd term, something that hasn’t happened so far. Instead her supporters started attacking Kiyaga claiming he was being sponsored by Amelia haters in State House yet in actual sense this wasn’t the case. Kiyaga felt the witch-hunt was becoming too much and decided to publicly declare interest in the Mawokota Seat, a thing that has continued to unsettle Amelia’s supporters. You would ordinarily expect she calls him up to verify claims that it’s her old foes fielding him but that hasn’t happened but instead her supporters have continued speculating how he is a proxy candidate brought to fight some other people’s wars. Kiyaga has taken advantage of his deep contacts in the Catholic Church & among the celebrity fraternity to intensify his political activities ahead of 2021.
Dr. Hilderman Kiyaga (Mazongoto)
Every weekend he drives to Mawokota and attends public functions. Kiyaga has for instance taken Bobi Wine of the People Power Movement a couple of times to grace public functions on weekends as guest house for honor. This has increased his chances to win come 2021. The Amelia camp has reacted with political nervousness whereby each function he attends, they come and drawn people in money. He recently graced a Catholic Church event and got a lot of kudos and this prompted Amelia, who was a broad, to send a voice note message announcing a bigger financial contribution which was read to a disinterested gathering. Mohammed Kirumira’s death was very painful. We all missed him but the truth is that it increased chances for Kiyaga because they shared the same crowd as they professed the same values putting emphasis on using the parliamentary platform to speak for the voiceless poor. Kiyaga’s growing strength has continued to create sleeplessness in the Amelia camp. The veteran politician’s supporters have resorted to referring to Kiyaga as a ghetto hooligan (The Muyaye) who doesn’t deserve to be sent to Parliament. When it comes to Mengo, Kiyaga still outweighs Amelia. The down to earth celebrity has a lot of fraternal support from popular CBS & BBS TV presenters who often host him for different charitable causes like the Bunamwaya Church project. They also play his music so often, a thing that deepens the voters’ appreciation of his brand as a singer and budding politician. For comments, call, text or Whatsapp us on 0703164755.
