Relevance has become one of the most overused words in marketing. Every brand wants it. Few understand what it actually requires.

In fast-moving markets, the pressure to stay current is constant. New platforms emerge and trends shift overnight. Consumer expectations evolve just as quickly. In response, many brands move faster than they think. They chase what is new, hoping to remain visible.

But the fact is, visibility is not the same as relevance. Relevance is built by understanding what to carry forward and what to adapt. That balance is where many brands struggle.

The truth is that some brands perform relevance. They change tone, language and identity depending on what is popular at the moment. The result ends up being short-term attention with little long-term connection.

Others grow into relevance. They evolve with their audience while staying anchored in who they are. Their changes feel natural and their presence feels consistent. They do not need to announce that they are current. People experience it.

Authenticity is not about staying the same. It is about evolving without losing the essence of what made people connect with the brand in the first place. It requires understanding the role a brand plays in people’s lives beyond transactions.

In Uganda, this dynamic is easy to observe in spaces where culture is constantly shifting. Music sounds different from one decade to the next. Fashion moves quickly. Social spaces continue to change. Yet certain patterns remain. The way people choose to celebrate and connect still carries a familiar rhythm.

Brands that have remained relevant over time tend to be those that have moved with this rhythm rather than trying to control it. They earn their place in culture by understanding where they genuinely belong and by showing up in ways that feel natural to the people around them.

This is where positioning becomes critical. A brand must be clear on what it stands for before deciding how it shows up. The distinction becomes particularly important for established brands. The longer a brand has existed, the greater the challenge of staying familiar without becoming dated and evolving without losing the identity that people have come to know.

For Uganda’s most established beer brands, this has meant growing alongside consumers rather than trying to lead culture from a distance. The strongest brands have maintained their relevance by staying connected to the spaces where Ugandan life unfolds, through music, everyday social occasions and collective experiences across generations.

Over its 75-year history, Bell has remained part of Uganda’s cultural story because it has continued to reflect the people and moments that shape the country. That continuity is what allows a brand to remain familiar while still feeling relevant. It creates room for new expressions of culture while staying true to what people already recognise and trust.

The introduction of Uganda’s Very Own reflects this approach. Rather than introducing a new story, it builds on one that has existed for decades. It shines a light on the people, influences and experiences that continue to shape Ugandan culture and have long been part of Bell’s journey. That is ultimately the challenge of relevance. Do you understand what people value about you and do you recognize how the world around you is changing?

The real story lies in how each generation has contributed to what we now experience as culture. And for brands, the question is not how fast you can change, but how well you understand what should never change.
