Equity Group Holdings Plc has unveiled an ambitious sustainability scorecard, revealing that it invested a staggering UGX 3.10 trillion (US$771 million) in social impact and sustainability initiatives across its regional operations by 2025, in a major push to accelerate Africa’s economic and environmental transformation.

The Group’s 2025 Sustainability Report, themed “A Sustainable World is a Transformed Africa,” paints a picture of a financial institution increasingly positioning itself beyond traditional banking, with billions of shillings channeled into climate financing, small businesses, education, healthcare, agriculture and programmes targeting vulnerable communities.

The figures highlight the growing scale of Equity Group’s social investment, with more than UGX 809.12 billion (US$201 million) deployed in sustainable and climate-aligned financing alone. The Group also recorded more than 47,000 climate-related transactions, distributed 75,855 clean-energy products and planted 9.1 million trees in 2025.

Its cumulative tree-planting drive has now reached 44.6 million trees, surpassing its original target of 35 million.

But the bank’s sustainability ambitions extend far beyond environmental conservation.

Through its enterprise development and financial inclusion programmes, Equity disbursed UGX 12.57 trillion (US$3.11 billion) to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), reinforcing the role of small businesses in driving economic growth, employment and household incomes across the region.

The Group also trained 962,924 entrepreneurs, while 2.49 million women and young people received financial education through the Equity Group Foundation.

Millions reached through social protection

One of the report’s most striking revelations is the scale of Equity’s social protection interventions, which reached 5.94 million people in 2025.

The Group disbursed UGX 5.40 trillion (US$1.34 billion) through cash transfer programmes, targeting vulnerable households and communities with financial support intended to strengthen resilience and improve livelihoods.

Its interventions also extended to refugees, with 115 refugees accessing UGX 1.80 billion in loans, while another 772 received training to improve their economic participation.

The report suggests a broader shift from conventional financial assistance towards combining cash transfers with credit access, entrepreneurship training and skills development to help vulnerable communities build sustainable livelihoods.

Education, healthcare takes centre stage

Equity’s investment in human capital was equally significant, with 60,009 scholarships supported across its regional footprint, including 29,515 university scholars, 4,039 technical and vocational education and training (TVET) scholars and 1,115 global scholars.

The Group also facilitated 9,772 paid internships, providing young people with opportunities to gain workplace experience and improve their prospects of securing employment.

Through partnerships with technology and education institutions, including Huawei ICT Academy, Amazon Web Services, World Quant University, Moringa School and IamtheCODE Foundation, Equity continued expanding access to digital and technology skills.

Its Equity Leaders Programme also recorded 415 innovators securing employment after completing a 12-month Tech Apprenticeship Programme.

In healthcare, Equity Afya expanded its medical franchise network to 150 outpatient centres across Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, recording more than 4.62 million cumulative patient visits.

The model is designed to decentralise access to affordable primary healthcare, particularly in underserved and urban-fringe communities.

Mwangi: Business success must translate into shared prosperity

Equity Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr James Mwangi said the latest performance demonstrated that commercial success and sustainable development could reinforce each other.

“Our 2025 performance demonstrates that commercial success and sustainable development are not competing priorities, but mutually reinforcing drivers of long-term prosperity,” Mwangi said.

He noted that stronger business performance increases the Group’s capacity to invest in people, enterprises and communities while building resilience across the markets it serves.

Mwangi added that the institution was committed to directing finance towards economic resilience while protecting the natural resources necessary for long-term prosperity.

“Our responsibility is to continue to turn potential into productive opportunity while protecting the natural systems that make prosperity possible,” he said.

Uganda positioned to benefit from regional sustainability drive

For Equity Bank Uganda, the report provides a framework for connecting the Group’s regional sustainability ambitions with local economic priorities.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Gift Shoko said the bank was focused on ensuring that financial services contributed to lasting economic and social progress in Uganda.

“In Uganda, our ambition is to ensure that banking contributes to lasting economic and social progress. This means supporting businesses to grow, widening access to appropriate financial solutions and working with partners to unlock opportunities for households, enterprises and communities,” Shoko said.

He added that the bank would continue strengthening commercial banking relationships while integrating environmental and social considerations into responsible financing decisions.

Private capital increasingly critical to Africa’s green transition

The report also underscores the importance of private-sector investment in financing Africa’s development priorities.

German Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Sebastian Groth said sustainable development at scale required stronger partnerships between governments, private businesses and development institutions.

He argued that development cooperation was shifting from traditional aid towards investment partnerships capable of mobilising private capital.

“By focusing on renewable energy, local value addition, and catalytic climate finance, Equity Group is demonstrating that sustainability is not a luxury for the few, but the very engine of transformation for the many,” Groth said.

He explained that public development funds should help unlock private investment, with the private sector providing the scale needed to sustain long-term transformation.

Meanwhile, Nasra Nanda, Built Environment Lead at the Executive Office of the President, highlighted the financial sector’s role in supporting sustainable construction, financing small and medium-sized enterprises in the built environment and integrating environmental resilience into investment decisions.

She argued that affordable housing and infrastructure must be designed to withstand long-term economic and environmental pressures.

Equity strengthens sustainability standards and accountability

Beyond its headline investments, Equity Group is strengthening the integration of environmental, social and governance considerations into lending decisions, operations and risk management.

Its frameworks include environmental and social risk screening, enhanced due diligence for high-risk sectors, climate scenario analysis and stress testing.

The Group is also preparing to implement the IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 sustainability disclosure standards, which are designed to strengthen corporate reporting on sustainability-related risks and climate-related financial information.

In a further step towards transparency, the Group published its inaugural Sustainable Development Impact Disclosure Report, which it describes as Africa’s second.

The accompanying disclosure by Equity Bank (Kenya) Limited sets out seven impact intentions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and commits the bank to annual monitoring of both positive and negative impacts.

Its 2030 targets include allocating 30 per cent of its loan book to food and agriculture, 65 per cent to MSMEs and 15 per cent to manufacturing, while doubling the Equity Afya network to 300 clinics.

In 2025, MSMEs accounted for 56.6 per cent of the Kenyan bank’s loan book, up from 50.1 per cent in 2023. Lending to women also increased to 23.9 per cent from 18 per cent over the same period.

Workforce and local businesses remain part of the equation

Equity Group’s sustainability strategy also encompasses its employees and local supply chains.

The Group’s workforce grew to 13,370 employees in 2025, with total employee training reaching 989,152 hours. Average training hours per employee increased to 74, compared with 45 in 2024.

The number of employees with disabilities rose to 67 from 54, while net employment turnover declined to 10.6 per cent from 11.1 per cent.

Local suppliers accounted for 90 per cent of the Group’s procurement expenditure, equivalent to UGX 1.48 trillion (approximately US$369 million), demonstrating the institution’s role in supporting businesses within its operating markets.

With banking, insurance, technology and foundation operations spanning Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside a representative office in Ethiopia, Equity Group is increasingly positioning sustainability as a central pillar of its regional growth strategy.

The 2025 report ultimately presents a financial institution seeking to measure its success not only through conventional banking performance, but also through the businesses it finances, the jobs it supports, the communities it reaches and the environmental footprint of its operations.

For Uganda and the wider region, the challenge will be translating these enormous regional commitments into measurable improvements in household incomes, business competitiveness, employment, access to healthcare and environmental resilience.
