Uganda is charging toward the 2026 General Elections with building tension after the Electoral Commission, led by its Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, released the exact number of voters expected to take part.
The Commission announced a massive 21,681,491 registered voters, a figure that instantly sparked excitement, debate, and rising political heat across the nation.
With such a huge electorate, the 2026 race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive and closely watched elections in Uganda’s history.
Justice Byabakama revealed this during a press conference at EC offices in Kampala that Uganda’s electoral landscape has grown wider and more complex than ever before.
The country now counts 146 districts, 312 counties, 353 constituencies, 2,191 sub-counties and towns, 10,717 parishes, 71,214 villages, and 50,739 polling stations.
These numbers show just how large the upcoming exercise will be, stretching from the busiest towns to the most remote villages.
Each location will play a part as millions of Ugandans prepare to line up and cast their votes.
A major highlight of the new update is the gender split, which shows women taking the lead.
Out of the more than 21 million voters, 11,347,129 are female, giving them a commanding 53% of the national vote. Men make up 10,334,362, or 47%.
With women outnumbering men by more than a million voters, their turnout will play a giant role in determining winners at every level.
Analysts say this could tilt the political balance and push candidates to fight harder for the female vote.
Justice Byabakama emphasized that the Electoral Commission is now entering a crucial phase of preparation.
One of the most important tasks underway is the distribution of Voter Location Slips.
These slips will help each voter know exactly where they are supposed to vote on polling day.
The Commission has directed parish supervisors, sub-county officials, and district election administrators to ensure these slips reach every single registered voter.
The message from the Chairperson is strong: no voter should miss the chance to participate.
As the countdown to 2026 continues, Uganda is bracing for a fierce and dramatic electoral season.
With millions ready to vote, thousands of polling stations set, and the Electoral Commission tightening its final plans under the leadership of Justice Byabakama, the country is preparing for what may become one of the most defining elections of its time. The numbers are now official—and the nation is ready for the showdown.
