The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that nominations for candidates in the 2026 Parliamentary Elections will take place on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd October 2025, with each aspirant required to pay a nomination fee of three million shillings.
Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, made the announcement during a press briefing in Kampala, stating that the exercise will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days at all district and city headquarters across the country.
He emphasized the importance of the nomination exercise, noting that it marks a key milestone in the EC’s implementation of the 2025/2026 General Elections Roadmap.
The nominations will cover various parliamentary positions, including directly elected Members of Parliament, District Woman Representatives, and special interest group representatives for youth, workers, persons with disabilities, and older persons.
To qualify for nomination, an aspirant must be a citizen of Uganda, a registered voter, and at least 18 years old.
Each candidate must be nominated by two registered voters who appear in person before the Returning Officer.
In addition, the nomination paper must be supported by at least ten registered voters from the constituency where the aspirant seeks election.
Candidates are required to submit their nomination forms in triplicate, along with sworn declarations confirming their eligibility and consent to stand.
Those endorsed by political parties must indicate their party sponsorship on the forms, and also present a statement from their appointed official agent.
A key requirement for all candidates is the payment of a non-refundable nomination fee of three million Ugandan shillings, payable through the Uganda Revenue Authority’s online system via authorized banks.
Justice Byabakama urged all aspiring candidates to prepare thoroughly and adhere strictly to the guidelines and legal requirements.
“The Commission calls upon all interested individuals to ensure full compliance with the nomination procedures to avoid disqualification or delays,” he said.
The Electoral Commission is expected to continue issuing updates as the country moves steadily toward the 2026 general elections.
