It’s said that when a man is drowning, he will even clutch at a straw. But for Dr. Kizza Besigye, even that straw seems out of reach as his legal fight for freedom takes a surprising twist.
Judge Singizi Douglas has ordered that the opposition leader be returned to prison, citing concerns over his failing health.
The judge, seemingly unwilling to take chances, noted that he could not proceed with a sick prisoner who might collapse in the courtroom.
“If a prisoner is unwell, I cannot continue. He might faint,” Judge Singizi declared before pausing the court session briefly.
Besigye, who has been on a hunger strike protesting his detention, has reportedly grown weaker by the day. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, previously revealed that his kidneys were under strain, raising fears about his well-being.
News of his condition has sparked protests in Mbarara, Bushenyi, and Kampala, with his supporters demanding his immediate release. But the state remains firm, refusing to let him go despite his deteriorating health.
His lawyers, however, are not backing down and have pushed for an urgent release order.
Court is sitting is in progress to hear the defense’s plea, while security forces remain on high alert, stationed around the court premises to quell any unrest.
Besigye’s legal team argues that keeping him behind bars without proper medical attention is a violation of his rights, and they are pressing for a quick decision in his favor.
As the courtroom drama continues, all eyes are on the judiciary. Will justice be served, or will Besigye’s health continue to hang in the balance? (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
