On arrival at the riotous Kisekka market downtown Kla, CMI Chief Brig Abel Kandiho (famous for cracking ex-IGP Kayihura police cells) signalled police and army officers to come near him. “Why are all these shops closed?” he asked on disembarking from his Land Cruiser. Instead the crowd surged forward before the security men could answer. They charged at Kandiho who disarmed them with his humility and willingness to listen to their accusations against mean-looking police and army men whose presence since mid day had led to the closing of shops. The determined youths then asked Kandiho why his boss M7 wasn’t letting their People Power leader Bobi Wine travel abroad and get treatment of his choice. He tried to explain but the shouting was too much as the crowd turned cheerful praising him for patiently listening to their attacks on police. The Kisekka crowd became even more excited when Kandiho seemed willing to listen to them more & less to his own junior colleagues from security. Taking advantage of his humility (almost Mayombo style) the young men in the crowd started taking selfies with Kandiho who remains part of the M7 renewed efforts to de-escalate tensions downtown regarding Bobi’s continued failure to travel for better treatment abroad.
