SDP President Micheal Mabikke and other People Power top leaders earlier this week held a meeting at Makerere University where it was agreed to shun Latif Sebaggala in favor of Abed Bwanika as the best candidate to fight Erias Lukwago for the position of Kampala Lord Mayor. The People Power group considers Lukwago Uganda’s enemy number one simply because he works well with FDC founding President Col Kizza Besigye whom they consider to be an obstacle to the realization of their personal political ambitions and objectives. The Makerere meeting was attended by little known John Mary Sebuwufu, Mabikke, Sam Lubega Mukaku, Bobi’s brother Fred Nyanzi among other People Power giants. The meeting decided that opposition figures who are working with Kizza Besigye will have to be fought in the next elections using Bobi Wine to make sure only leaders that profess People Power decisively challenge the NRM in Buganda. The Makerere meeting resolved that Latif Sebaggala, who faces problems like being brother to discredited Nasser Sebaggala and being a long serving MP incumbent (for 20 years since 2001), is too weak to manage the indomitable Erias Lukwago. Mabikke later announced to State-owned Bukedde newspaper that Bobi’s support had been withdrawn from Latif Sebaggala to “fighter” Abed Bwanika who the People Power leadership considers to be easier brand to sell to Kampala voters than Latif Sebaggala. Under the stewardship of Mabikke, who himself was badly walloped by Lukwago in 2011, the meeting resolved on the need to begin marketing Bwanika early so that Lukwago becomes history by 2021. However, the activities of the Mabikke group could create serious chaos with DP mainstream leadership some of whose NEC members like Legal Advisor Sam Muyizi and spokesperson Kenneth Kakande are lately becoming cautious about the intentions of the Mabikke/Bwanika group who are continuing to rebrand what has always existed as DP into DP Bloc. In fact Kakande says DP hasn’t embraced hostilities the Mabikke group are orchestrating against Betty Nambooze, Erias Lukwago and FDC’s Kizza Besigye in order to revenge their uncompromising opposition to NRM’s Yoweri Museveni. Kakande says beginning to fight for positions among People Power adherents could become the Achilles Heels that could politically break the Bobi Wine momentum. It’s also very unlikely that Latif Sebaggala, who already commenced campaigning, will easily bow out and give way for Abed Bwanika, a controversial figure who many Kampala voters are very cautious about with many saying they don’t politically understand him. Like with many other positions, People Power might end up having two or even more candidates facing the invincible Erias Lukwago.
