- Kyaggwe edge Gomba 1-0 at Wankulukuku to lift their maiden title as the 2026 Airtel Masaza Cup concludes in style.
Airtel Uganda has congratulated Kyaggwe upon winning their first-ever Masaza Cup title, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gomba in the 2026 Airtel Masaza Cup final at Muteesa II Memorial Stadium, Wankulukuku, on Saturday, 31 October.
The historic victory marked a significant milestone for Kyaggwe, ending their long wait for the coveted trophy since the tournament’s revival in 2004. Having previously reached the final in 2024, only to fall short against Buddu, the county finally turned its pursuit of the championship into silverware.
In a closely contested final that brought together thousands of football fans, both sides headed into the half-time break goalless. However, Kyaggwe returned for the second half with renewed determination, with George Isingoma Kato finding the back of the net to deliver the decisive goal and seal his county’s maiden triumph.
The final was graced by His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, accompanied by his daughter, Princess Katrina Ssangalyambogo. The Kabaka witnessed the thrilling encounter and presented the trophy to the victorious Kyaggwe team, marking the culmination of another memorable edition of Buganda’s premier football competition.
Speaking at the finals, Ali Balunywa, Sales and Distribution Director at Airtel Uganda, congratulated the winners and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its partnership with the Buganda Kingdom and the role of the Masaza Cup in nurturing young talent.
“Congratulations to Kyaggwe on their historic first title, and commendation to all the counties, players, coaches and supporters who have made the 2026 edition such a memorable celebration of football. Our commitment to this partnership remains rooted in supporting opportunities for young people and strengthening the communities we serve. We are delighted to be part of this journey with the Buganda Kingdom.” he said.
He added, “At Airtel, we believe that talent deserves a platform, and the Masaza Cup continues to provide exactly that. Beyond the excitement on the pitch, this tournament brings communities together, nurtures emerging football talent and gives young people an opportunity to showcase their abilities while representing the counties they proudly call home.
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, also congratulated Kyaggwe on their maiden triumph, commending the participating counties for their contribution to another successful tournament.
“I congratulate Kyaggwe upon winning their first-ever Masaza Cup title. This achievement is a testament to the commitment, talent and determination of the players, technical team and everyone who has supported the county throughout the competition. I also commend Gomba for reaching the final and all the counties that participated.
He further added, “The Masaza Cup is an important platform for bringing our people together, nurturing young talent and instilling values of discipline, teamwork and responsibility. We encourage our young people to continue embracing sport as a positive avenue for personal development and contribution to their communities,” he said.
Beyond the final, the 2026 Airtel Masaza Cup also celebrated outstanding performances and sportsmanship across the participating counties. Butambala secured third place after defeating Bugerere 1-0 and further distinguished itself by winning the Most Disciplined County and Most Improved County awards.
Individual honours saw Kyaggwe’s Godfrey Arijole named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), while Gomba’s Meddie Kasule claimed the Golden Boot after finishing as the competition’s leading scorer with six goals. Herbert Masaba of Mawogola was named Best Goalkeeper.
The 2026 edition brought together 18 counties, once again demonstrating the power of football to unite communities, celebrate Buganda’s cultural identity and provide a platform for emerging sporting talent.
Through its partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, Airtel Uganda continues to support the Masaza Cup as more than a football competition, recognising its role in promoting youth talent, encouraging discipline and teamwork, and bringing communities together through sport.
