The former Ajuri County Parliamentary candidate Isaac Apenyo Achol has been pushed behind the bars at Lira Central Prison for alleged failure to pay Shs84bn debts accruing from court costs in an election petition. Apenyo who appeared before Thaddeus Opesen, the Assistant Registrar of Lira High court on Monday morning after his arrest by court bailiffs from Amazon Pub along Kampala road on Sunday night, was locked up briefly at Lira Central Police Station before being sent to the Prison. Apenyo is accused of failing to pay about Shs84m accruing from his election petition he filed against the incumbent Ajuri County MP Denis Hamson Obua which he lost terribly. In 2015, Apenyo contested against Obua in the NRM party primaries and lost which prompted him to challenge the results in court where also lost. Court awarded Obua costs of the suit amounting to Shs84m. It is alleged that Apenyo has since been in hiding though pleading with Obua to let him off the hook by ignoring the court coasts and yesterday when he was harvested as he sneaked into the Lira town. David Ongom Mudong, the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, told URN that the police only helped to enforce the arrest warrant issued by court against Apenyo.
Obua says Apenyo has been reluctant to pay his debt despite several attempts to plead with him. In February, 2019, the former Erute North MP, Geoffrey Omara Adigi was also arrested by the court Bailiffs from Kampala for failing to pay court costs accruing from his election petition against the incumbent MP, Charles Angiro Gutmoi.
