Former Mawokota South MP Yusuf Nsibambi has not been doing well health-wise in recent months, according to his close political ally and former Kawempe North MP Hajji Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo, although he says the former FDC chief whip is now okay.
“Nsibambi has not been doing well health-wise of recent, but I think he is now okay. You will soon hear from him,” Ssebagala said during The Morning Briefing on Mulengera Media.
The revelation comes at a time when Nsibambi has largely remained away from the political spotlight following a bruising defeat in the 2026 parliamentary elections and a subsequent decision to abandon the Opposition and join the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Nsibambi, who had represented Mawokota South on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket, lost his seat to NRM’s Suzan Nakawuki. The defeat was particularly painful because Nsibambi had defeated Nakawuki by more than 10,000 votes in the 2021 election.
His reaction to the loss subsequently became part of the political conversation around him. Nsibambi announced his retirement from elective politics and withdrew some of the community projects he had previously supported in Mawokota South, including a transformer supplying electricity to several villages.
While Nsibambi defended the decision as a response to what he considered voters’ rejection of his efforts, his conduct after the defeat raised questions about just how deeply the loss had affected him. It is in this context that Ssebagala’s revelation about his recent health difficulties has attracted attention, although there is no evidence linking the two.
Before his political realignment, Nsibambi had been one of the Opposition politicians who maintained contact with Ssebagala. Their relationship became particularly visible when the two joined other Opposition-leaning politicians for a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State House, Entebbe, shortly after the January 15, 2025 election.
The meeting generated debate within Opposition circles, with questions about why politicians who had spent years fighting Museveni were suddenly engaging him directly. Nsibambi later explained that the discussions included political tensions, political prisoners, reconciliation and national issues.
For Ssebagala, the engagement was significant because it demonstrated that political relationships and positions can change with circumstances.
Nsibambi subsequently made the bigger move, formally leaving FDC for the NRM. He explained that his engagements with Museveni had changed his understanding of the President and that he wanted to pursue peace, unity and development from within the ruling establishment.
Ssebagala himself has now taken a similar political direction.
The former Kawempe North MP started his political career in the Democratic Party before joining NUP and remaining associated with Opposition politics for years. Now he has openly declared his support for Museveni or whoever the President chooses to succeed him in 2031.
While Nsibambi has remained relatively quiet since his NRM switch, Latif believes the public will soon hear from him again. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
