Dr. Yusuf Serunkuma, one of Uganda’s most eminent political theorists, last week conducted a podcast interview with his former boss and mentor Andrew Mwenda. It was conducted for and on behalf of The Observer media, for which Serunkuma writes a very insightful weekly political column.
Mwenda invited Serunkuma to end his fence-sitting and join PLU so that he gets to meet both Museveni and MK from whom he said he would learn a lot about political pragmatism. He asserted that Serunkuma should interact with the two men as opposed to imagining they are so withdrawn and can’t be met by intellectuals like him, for one on one discussions.
Serunkuma hesitated saying he wasn’t interested in having any private meetings with either of the two men. Mwenda illustrated why he is convinced that Gen MK’s ascendance to Presidency is simply unstoppable.
Mwenda called on Serunkuma to accept the fact that being Gen Museveni’s son makes Gen MK an unusual CDF and a unique candidate for Presidency the day he officially declares his bid for the top job.
Serunkuma consoled himself by openly telling Mwenda why he selfishly wants Gen MK to expedite his political plans and take over power from his father. Serunkuma said he wants Gen MK to become President today, and not tomorrow, because he believes he will be easier to be overcome and toppled from the Presidency than has been the case with his father.
As Mwenda intently listened, Serunkuma demonstrated how and why millions of change-seeking Ugandans must realize it’s in their interest to have Gen MK assume the Presidency now as opposed to waiting for 2031, because he will be easier for them to topple and get back their country, as opposed to his dad Gen YK Museveni who has been an invincible politician for now 40 years and still counting.
