PLU Director Communications Andrew Mwenda, also MD for the Independent news magazine, has claimed there won’t be any day when the western governments, namely the US and those of EU, will be mounting pressure on the Museveni government to treat Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused more humanely.
Mwenda says that, whereas millions of Ugandans think Besigye is a victim of deliberate political persecution by President Museveni, the truth is that Western governments know the bitter truth-namely that the four-time Presidential candidate indeed plotted to obliterate Gen YK Museveni and thereafter proceed to take over government using extra-judicial means.
Speaking in an interview with the Observer Newspaper’s Dr. Yusuf Serunkuma, Mwenda claimed that the video and audio recordings implicating Besigye in the said mischief were obtained by the US embassy in Kampala which went ahead to share the same with counterpart governments in the western capitals.
That the recordings were taken to labs in the Western capitals from where they were subjected to forensic assessment and in the end were authenticated as genuine and not AI-generated nor edited. Mwenda said that the Western governments are convinced that Dr. Besigye is as guilty as charged which is why they are quiet at the time when everyone would have expected them to be out criticizing the Museveni regime.
Mwenda said that there are many other powerful groups who ordinarily would be out castigating Museveni for ‘persecuting’ Besigye but they are quiet because the Ugandan state has impressed it upon them that they have credible evidence against him. Mwenda said that because they are convinced that the former President’s physician is guilty as charged, many western governments have preferred to remain indifferent because Besigye’s culpability is so overwhelming, which makes it hard for anyone to speak in his defense.
Mwenda implied that however worse things get, including Besigye dying in prison, he is 100% certain that no western government will be coming out to castigate and condemn Gen YK Museveni regarding KB’s treason case. In the same podcast, Mwenda explained that the likes of Erias Lukwago, Muwanga Kivumbi, Miria Matembe, Sarah Bireete and others have had to be gone after and cowed because there was well founded fear that they would lead the public opposition to the sweeping service delivery reforms Gen MK and his PLU adherents intended to orchestrate during Gen Museveni’s ongoing term of government.
Mwenda said in Miria Matembe’s case, she invited trouble onto herself when she made derogatory remarks while provoking and daring Gen MK to come and arrest her. Throughout the recorded interview, Dr. Serunkuma pushed and tried to prompt Mwenda to condemn and find fault in the CDF’s modus operandi but the veteran journalist from Kanyandahi refused to do, repeatedly making it clear that Gen Kainerugaba was a uniquely powerful army commander (unlike any of his predecessors) because of the leverage that comes with being a sitting President’s son.
