The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has commended Kalangala District Local Government for maintaining timely compliance with key tax obligations following an engagement aimed at strengthening tax administration and improving the experience of public sector taxpayers.
The engagement was conducted by URA’s Public Sector Office as part of efforts to enhance taxpayer compliance, strengthen collaboration with local governments and ensure that public institutions remain up to date with their statutory tax responsibilities.
Kalangala District Chief Administrative Officer, Ssebandeke Richard, welcomed the URA team led by Marion Lubowa, Supervisor of the Public Sector Office.
Ssebandeke appreciated URA for taking the initiative to engage local government officials directly, saying the interaction provides an opportunity for officials to better understand their tax obligations, statutory responsibilities and recent reforms in tax administration.
The engagement also provided a platform for district officials to seek clarification on tax-related matters and receive guidance on measures needed to maintain compliance.
Lubowa commended the district leadership for its performance, particularly for ensuring that key tax returns are filed on time.
She specifically applauded Kalangala District for timely filing of Withholding Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) returns, attributing the achievement to the commitment of the district leadership.
Lubowa said timely filing and payment of tax obligations are critical to maintaining a strong compliance culture within public institutions.
The engagement is part of URA’s broader efforts to move beyond enforcement and strengthen voluntary compliance through taxpayer education, stakeholder engagement and continuous guidance.
URA officials also used the interaction to remind local government officials of their statutory functions and provide guidance on new tax reforms that affect public sector institutions.
The authority says continued collaboration with local governments is important in addressing compliance gaps, improving tax administration and ensuring that public institutions meet their obligations.
For Kalangala District, the engagement also reinforced the importance of sustaining the compliance practices that have enabled it to file its tax returns on time.
URA encouraged the district leadership to maintain the momentum and continue working closely with the authority whenever clarification or guidance is required.
