The Electoral Commission of Uganda has finally released the gazette edition, specially dedicated to disclosing the details and actual number of votes each of the Ugandan leader or politician who stood for an MP position got.
Some politicians have a habit of exaggerating and being deceptive about the actual number of votes or percentage they got in the ballot box. And this is common with both those who lose and those who win their respective races too.
With this latest Gazette, no leader should be permitted to lie about the percentage with which they won or lost. The details of the full Gazette are replicated hereunder for referencing purposes.
Let’s peruse the lists and know who won narrowly and those who lost narrowly. There are some contestants like Kalungu West’s Joseph Sewungu who won with a margin of as low as 26 votes. Equally true, there are candidates who lost and were beaten with a vote difference of as low as 10 votes. It hurts but it happens. There are also many areas where political parties had clear upper hand but lost merely because of failure to agree on one candidate, which culminated into a multiplicity of candidates vying for the same seat even when they profess belonging to the same political formation or organization.
There are also constituencies, including some in Kasese, where NUP-sponsored candidates narrowly lost, with a vote difference of as few as 100 votes. There are also cases were people won and got declared MPs with less than a total of 5000 votes or less.
It’s important for Ugandans, who are increasingly becoming politically interested, to reflect on all this and engage in informed political discourse.
