National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) staff have once again elevated Uganda’s engineering profile on the continental stage following the appointment of two of their own to a prestigious African body.
Dr. Eng. Martin Kalibbala and Eng. Andrew Muhwezi, both senior officials at NWSC, have been appointed and approved by the Executive Board of the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO) to serve on the newly inaugurated External Relations Committee (ERC). Dr. Eng. Kalibbala will serve as Chairman of the ERC, while Eng. Muhwezi joins as a Committee Member.
Their appointment highlights NWSC’s growing influence within the engineering fraternity across Africa and underscores Uganda’s expanding footprint in continental engineering leadership. At NWSC, Eng. Andrew Muhwezi serves as Chief Manager Water Production at Kampala Water, while Dr. Eng. Martin Kalibbala is the Senior Manager for Performance Management and Staff Development. Both are also notable members of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) and are registered with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
The ERC–FAEO is an 18-member committee tasked with driving FAEO’s technical, capacity-building, administrative collaborations and strategic partnerships with leading global and continental institutions. These include the African Union (AU), UNESCO, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP), the Pan American Federation of Engineering Societies (PAFES), the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), the Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC-UK), the Institution of Engineers India (IEI), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the European Federation of National Engineering Organizations (FEANI), FIDIC Africa, the National Association of Infrastructure Companies (NAIC-Russia), the Russian Highway State Company (RHSC), among other key stakeholders.
The committee’s overarching mandate is to strengthen FAEO’s global and continental engagement while unlocking strategic opportunities for member institutions such as UIPE and their engineers. Through high-level networking and advocacy, the ERC plays a role in shaping continental policy and trade standards, expanding access to international training and certification programs, promoting exposure to cutting-edge global engineering practices, and creating linkages for major infrastructure and business opportunities. It also enhances professional recognition and membership value, strengthens institutional advocacy with national governments including Uganda, and supports career exchange programs for professionals and young engineers.
Through this representation, NWSC, UIPE, and the wider Ugandan engineering community stand to benefit from increased visibility, stronger partnerships, and expanded professional and business opportunities across Africa and beyond.
