President Yoweri Museveni left many people laughing in Rubaga after jokingly “convicting” residents for voting opposition leaders.
The light-hearted moment happened on Monday, 5th January 2026, during Museveni’s presidential campaign rally at Kitebi Primary School Playground in Rubaga division. Speaking in a playful tone, the President teased voters for choosing leaders from the opposition who, according to him, rarely follow up on government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM).
As he addressed supporters, Museveni casually asked who their area Member of Parliament was. He then joked, saying, “I don’t even know the MP for Rubaga South.” The remark drew laughter from the crowd.
Parliament Speaker and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson Anita Among stepped in and told the President that the MP is Aloysius Mukasa of NUP, adding that Mukasa has never spoken in Parliament since taking oath.
Museveni continued the joke, playfully blaming Rubaga voters for electing a leader he has never heard from, and also mentioned Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, whom he described as always opposing government programs.
The President then encouraged supporters to vote for NRM parliamentary candidate Musa Mbaziira, the current Speaker of Rubaga Division Council. He praised Mbaziira as a promising young man who is admired by First Lady Janet Museveni.
Mbaziira later addressed the rally and asked the President to intervene on three issues affecting residents: securing the land for Nateete Market vendors, settling Busega Market compensation, and addressing challenges faced by traders around the Mandela junction. Museveni agreed to work on the matters.
Mbaziira said that once these issues are resolved, NRM will reclaim Rubaga.
Museveni told supporters that his goal is to see every Ugandan become wealthy, not just a small group. He also urged citizens to help government identify those who steal public funds.
As the rally ended, Museveni asked Ugandans to grant him a seventh term, describing it as a term of healing, aimed at finally eliminating poverty across the country.
The President further dismissed claims that the NRM government neglected Buganda Region, saying there is clear evidence of extensive development across the area. He noted that Buganda has benefited from wide-ranging economic and social infrastructure development, wealth and job creation, driven by various government initiatives under NRM leadership.
The NRM Presidential Candidate encouraged residents to appreciate and safeguard government wealth creation initiatives, saying they are designed to uplift all Ugandans out of poverty, as demonstrated by success stories across the country.
The First Lady, Mama Janet Kataha Museveni called on the residents of Rubaga to embrace unity and consolidate their support for the NRM party to secure a collective victory.
