The political tensions in Uganda escalated after Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, responded strongly to Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) over claims regarding a potential by-election in Bukedea.
At President Yoweri Museveni’s rally at Nsambwe Primary School playground in Kyegonza sub-county in Gomba District on Tuesday, Among dismissed Kyagulanyi’s statement about a by-election following his anticipated victory in the 2026 presidential race.
She confidently stated that Bobi Wine’s prediction was false, asserting that President Museveni would remain in power beyond 2026, and the NRM would continue to lead the country. Among firmly rejected Kyagulanyi’s suggestion that his victory would bring immediate changes, especially in Bukedea.
The confrontation began after Kyagulanyi addressed a massive crowd in Bukedea on Saturday. He accused the government of blocking opposition candidates from contesting the Bukedea Woman MP seat, allowing Among to run uncontested.
Kyagulanyi claimed that security forces and the Electoral Commission had conspired to keep his supporters who intended to run for Bukedea Woman MP Seat from entering the race, clearing the way for Among’s re-election.
He also called for change, criticizing the government for hoarding wealth and neglecting essential services like clean water and healthcare. Kyagulanyi urged Ugandans to seize the chance to end “40 years of bad leadership” and deliver better service delivery.
AMONG PUSHES BACK:
In response, Among, speaking at the Gomba rally which actually is Kyagulanyi’s homeland, ridiculed Kyagulanyi for what she termed his small crowd in Bukedea, controversially claiming that only about 10 people attended his rally. She highlighted the massive NRM support in her own district of Bukedea and stressed that the people there had made it clear that Kyagulanyi was not ready to lead Uganda.
Among suggested that Bukedea residents had sent a message to Kyagulanyi, questioning his ability to govern a country as complex as Uganda.
Among also used the moment to address Uganda’s urgent infrastructure issues, particularly roads in poor condition like the Masaka-Villa Maria highway. She urged the government to prioritize road repairs, warning that neglecting these issues would only lead to more expensive fixes later. She emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further deterioration.
Meanwhile, Haruna Kasolo, the NRM Vice-Chairperson for Buganda Region speaking at the same Gomba rally, called for better training for NRM leaders on the provisions of the Land Act to resolve land disputes, which have been a source of ongoing controversy and caused NRM support to diminish in Buganda. He suggested that party leaders at all levels be educated on how to handle these issues effectively to avoid conflicts.
As the 2026 election approaches, the stakes are higher than ever. While Kyagulanyi vows to bring change and end the NRM’s 40-year dominance, Among and the ruling party continue to defend their track record and leadership. The clash between these two young political figures is only intensifying as they battle for control of Uganda’s future.
