At one of his re-election campaign rallies, Kimanya-Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika reflected on his deprived childhood and told a cheering crowd about the adversity he endured (including having to tell lies to the authorities at Masaka SSS, being deceptive, revolting against his mum, living in strangers’ homes, fetching water and making bricks) in order to afford school fees to have himself educated.
He says all this deprivation as a child made him stronger and used to hardship-implying that there is no amount of abuses, misrepresentation, deliberate deceit, demonisation and persecution from NUP bloggers that can diminish him in any way.
At the same rallies, where he often shares a platform with Kakande, Mpuuga, Masaka City Mayoral Candidate Nakku Musana Mulindwa and other DF candidates, Bwanika has also repeatedly been inciting Masaka voters to accept DF as their own party, which is their only conduit to adequately access the eating table of Uganda and take out their share.
He says the people of Masaka will get much more to materially change their lives (beyond just the LoP position NUP gave their son Mpuuga) the moment DF, which doesn’t have a Presidential Candidate, produces many MPs, Mayors and Councillors in the forthcoming elections.
Bwanika keeps referencing the public infrastructure projects which the trio of him, Mpuuga and Kakande have lobbied in Parliament and delivered for Masaka City in just five years-including roads, hospitals, the Masaka stadium etc. He says that much more is going to be delivered for the Masaka people in the next five years up to 2031, the moment DF MP candidates are re-elected.
Bwanika, who contemptuously has offered to pay for the education of his NUP-sponsored opponent Patrick Kutesa for 10 years until he becomes a frequent English speaker capable of ably expressing himself in public, has also been very remorseful about the billions Bobi Wine has been receiving and controlling through the IPOD arrangement, based on the number of MPs NUP has, including the DF trio representing Masaka City.
He says that in the first four years of their being in Parliament (2021-2025), the NUP party has been able to pocket Shs1bn. He says that under DF, should the trio be re-elected, that money coming to the Kavule party by virtue of having those three MPs for Masaka City, will exclusively be availed and dedicated to financing the upgrading of roads and other public infrastructure in Masaka City. He added that whatever the NUP party used that money for, there was no benefit or quid pro quo for the people of Masaka who voted the trio.
“Now I’m here to call on you that as Masaka City voters, if you are interested in that Shs1bn please vote us back and we ensure that money is spent on your roads and other infrastructure because Rt. Hon Mathias Mpuuga as the DF President will be having control and the last word on the money.”
Making it clear that politics is about nothing but having access to the apex decision-making table where the country’s resources are formally and informally appropriated from, Bwanika has repeatedly bragged about Mathias Mpuuga being party President, himself party treasurer and Juliet Kakande being the head Women league as a demonstration of proof that it’s only through DF that the people of Masaka can truly be in charge of their own political destiny and have their voice heard at the national level.
He demands to know which key top positions NUP in its current state has given someone from Masaka to prove that the Kavule party too genuinely cares about the genuine empowerment and visibility of Masaka leaders and political products at the national level. He repeatedly implies none of the big people from Masaka who remain inside NUP hold any top positions and real power at Kavule.
The LoP position their son Mpuuga wielded for 2.5 years was taken away and given to Joel Ssenyonyi who hails from Nakasongola and is for Nakawa. The Deputy Presidency for NUP, which Mpuuga once wielded, was equally taken away and given to Muwanga Kivumbi from Butambala. Basing on all this, Bwanika is calling on Masaka voters to prioritize DF, which he says is the only political party in the contemporary Uganda politics under which their sons and daughters can wield real power.
The loud-mouthed DF founding member is confident that his message is being bought by the voters and that DF is going to grab the three Masaka City MP positions and capture many other elective positions not only in Greater Masaka and Buganda but in the whole country.
The potential defeat of Kutesa, Rose Nalubowa, Gyavira Ssebina Lubowa and other NUP-sponsored candidates facing DF challengers will go a long way to embolden the Bwanika-like narrative and this explains why Bobi Wine prays every day and night for the defeat of the DF trio. Otherwise, their victory will be a personal loss to him as the Supreme leader of NUP.
