The Ministry of Works and Transport on Thursday, December 18, 2025 launched the annual Road Safety Week at the Namanve Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre, marking the start of a nationwide campaign aimed at improving road safety by ensuring vehicles on Ugandan roads are in proper condition.
This year’s campaign is running under the theme “Safe Vehicles for a Safer Uganda”, highlighting Government’s renewed focus on tackling road crashes by addressing unsafe and poorly maintained vehicles, which remain a major contributor to traffic accidents.
The launch was officiated by Ms. Barbara Namugambe, representing the Minister for Works and Transport. In her address, she noted that achieving safer roads requires collective effort, calling on government agencies, vehicle owners, transport operators, and road users to play their part in promoting vehicle roadworthiness.
Participants at the event were also guided through a live demonstration of the upcoming Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) process, offering stakeholders a practical understanding of how inspections will be carried out once the programme is fully implemented.
It was revealed that preparations are underway to enforce mandatory vehicle inspections, starting with government-owned vehicles, a move which is intended to demonstrate leadership, accountability, and compliance before the inspection programme is extended to the general public.
Road Safety Week is observed annually and features a range of activities including public awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagements, and community outreach initiatives across the country, all aimed at strengthening road safety and reducing crashes on Uganda’s highways.
