During a closed meeting on Wednesday inside the Okello House compound, which is part of State House Nakasero, the more than 1,000 Museveni mobilisers from Kampala villages and cells were asked to stop using too much English while moving door to door canvassing for support towards incumbent’s re-election.
The plea was made by SPA Moses Byaruhanga, who is a big man at State House and also the Chief Strategist for Gen Museveni’s 2026 re-election.
Byaruhanga said that they had realized that there is growing hostility towards excessive usage of English especially among Kampala’s urban poor in the ghettos where NRM’s acceptability must increase if Gen Museveni is to beat all his opponents in Kampala, like he did against PK Semogerere and Kibirige Mayanja in 1996.
Byaruhanga advised that English should only be used in extreme circumstances where its usage can’t be avoided. That people lately associate English language users with corruption, self-seeking, dishonesty and fraudulent intentions.
Byaruhanga also expressed his wish to have the same replicated at all government offices, which ordinary Ugandans frequently visit to seek for services.
He wondered why any employee or manager of UEDCL, NWSC, a commercial bank and the Microfinance Support Centre would insist on addressing poor market vendors, boda riders or peasants SACCO members in English yet Kampala Metropolitan Area districts’ most used and most understood language is Luganda.
It was agreed during the same meeting that everything that needs to be done to increase Gen YK Museveni’s marketability and electability among Kampala residents be done, including encouraging key NRM mobilizers in villages and cells to become more frequent at public gatherings such as parties, prayer gatherings, birthday parties, graduation parties and funerals etc. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
