It’s increasingly dawning on the NUP top leadership that the Ugandan state won’t be letting jailed Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the very belligerent deputy spokesman, ever getting out of prison to be able to effectively participate in the 2026 elections as a candidate for Nakawa East MP Seat.
Party leaders are increasingly getting nervous about this having realized that, even when he can be nominated to be a candidate without being physically present, Waiswa Mufumbiro’s candidature wouldn’t be viable in such hostile a Buganda constituency-as many propagandists and online activists will be out questioning why the party would take such a gamble instead of fronting someone else since it doesn’t have scarcity of capable cadres.
Because of such fears, the idea of nominating Waiswa in absentia as he continues to rot and languish in jail, is increasingly being abandoned-and what now is on table is the discussion concerning who the party’s dangerous substitute has to be.
Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya and LoP Joel Ssenyonyi are some of the key decision makers at Robert Kyagulanyi’s court and there is no way a consequential decision like that one can be taken or made without them being party to it.
Yet the bad news clearly now is that the two power brokers aren’t unanimous on who that dangerous substitute has to be. Whereas Rubongoya favours lawyer Kenneth Paul Kakande (for reasons that were well articulated in our earlier reporting contained hereunder in this link https://mulengeranews.com/heres-why-rubongoya-is-desperate-to-reward-lawyer-kenneth-paul-kakande/), Joel Ssenyonyi is vehemently favouring Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro’s twin brother Kato.
Ssenyonyi’s reasoning is that the MP position would enable Waiswa advance his political career, access perks that come with being an MP and thereby materially bettering his own life and that of his immediate family members having been grassing as part of the anti-Museveni for more than 20 years now. This Ssenyonyi point of view (that Kato gets to eat in Waiswa’s place) is supported by several Kavule insiders as sensible and prudent.
Yet those backing Kakande are of the view that fronting Waiswa’s twin brother will expose NUP to being castigated by social media pundits for promoting dynastic tendences. Those backing Kato are of the view that the same anti-Kyagulanyi propagandists will use that same move of fronting Kakande to claim on media that Mr. Wine is a very ungrateful user who quickly moves on after a comrade in the struggle gets into problems.
“The best thing would be to have Waisswa nominated in absentia so that he is on the ballot even without being physically present to campaign and by some luck, voters might still go for the umbrella and he makes history winning that MP Seat without campaigning. The same will keep his name in the media and thereby pressurizing the regime for his release from illegal detention,” asserted one of the kavule insiders we spoke to for this article.
