The top leadership of NUP party has tentatively managed to cow Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko into bowing out of the 2026 race. And this is all aimed at appeasing and accommodating Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende who Kavule wants out merely because they feel obliged to create space for the outgoing KCCA Speaker, the larger-than-life Princess Zahara Luyirika.
Sources indicate that Nyeko was summoned to Kavule and told there was no time to waste-he was simply required to bow out or risk a full-blown fight with the party. One official reportedly told him: “Until five years ago you were a nobody and it’s us who gave you that lucrative job you have been holding and we are here to tell you that five years is enough. We don’t expect you to put up any fight.”
Nyeko, a former LC3 Councillor who in 2021 unexpectedly beat Ibrahim Kasozi and became the Makindye East MP, had no option but to accept the terms that were being dictated to him. “Our struggle is clearly at stake here because we are stuck with Shamim Malende. The fight between those two women is tearing the party apart. We want to accommodate Malende by giving her that Seat of Makindye East and as for you, we shall find something after elections.”
It wasn’t readily clear if Shamim Malende, who previously resisted calls to relocate to Kawempe South, will be accepting going for the Makindye East MP Seat where she risks facing DF’s Mike Mabikke Sseninde who is determined to fight and expose NUP like never before.
