The 4th edition of the Lira Ladies Golf Open came to a thrilling close on July 5, with Kabale Golf Club’s Meron Kyomugisha emerging as the overall champion, in a two-day tournament, hosted at Lira Golf Course, attracting more than 100 female golfers from across Uganda, sponsored by Equity Bank Uganda as part of its continued investment in women’s sports development.
The tournament highlighted the rising prominence of women in golf, particularly in Northern Uganda, with the championship featuring both professional and amateur categories. Professionals played on Friday, while amateur players competed on Saturday.
Equity Bank, a long-time supporter of women’s initiatives in both business and sport, reaffirmed its commitment through its sponsorship of the event. According to Kenneth Okello, the Manager of Equity Bank’s Lira Branch, the bank’s involvement reflects its broader agenda to empower communities through inclusive and impactful engagements.
He explained that the bank values initiatives that foster both social and economic growth, and the Lira Ladies Open offers a unique opportunity to achieve both.
Beyond competition, the tournament served as a vital platform for networking, mentorship, and talent development, elements that the Bank views as critical to driving transformation at the grassroots level.
Kyomugisha’s consistent and focused play across the two days earned her the top spot, with prominent golfers Martha Babirye and Peace Kabasweka finishing jointly in second place. Their performances were praised by both fans and fellow players, underscoring the increasing level of competitiveness in Uganda’s women’s golf scene.
Since 2008, Equity Bank has used golf as a platform for social impact and community engagement. This year’s edition of the Lira Ladies Open once again reinforced the bank’s commitment to gender inclusion and sports empowerment.
Organisers and participants described the event as a resounding success, noting the growing visibility and participation of women in the game.
