His decision to publicly defend his brother Fred Nyanzi’s son Churchhill Sentamu, the Makerere University President, has cost Eddie Yawe the opportunity to join the 12th Parliament (2026-2031) on the ticket of National Unity Platform (NUP).
He had expressed interest to carry the NUP flag for Gomba East come 2026 (the Sentamus originate from Gomba & that’s where they are buried). But the NUP’s EMC won’t be giving it to him because it recently emerged that Magere has never forgiven Yawe over the pro-Churchill stance he took when the Makerere President attended a function presided over by Gen Museveni at the University’s Freedom Square.
That attendance, which was the right thing, angered many NUP foot soldiers and the party fraternity got divided. Some castigated the young man for his politics of moderation as others defended his political maturity and sense of responsibility and leadership. Eddie Yawe was complementary towards his nephew making it clear there was no need for him to apologize the way foot soldiers were demanding.
Well briefed sources now say that this sealed Eddie Yawe’s fate as it amounted to being insensitive and controversial in the eyes of his brother and opposition king maker Bobi Wine.
Poor man, Yawe had already agreed with Kavule on the Gomba East project which is why he had even proceeded to change his particulars on the national ID in preparation for 2026. He had agreed to leave Kira Municipality for George Musisi and he is now certain to end up with nothing once again. Some are speculating that Eddie Yawe was born politically unlucky.
In 2011 he stood for Kampala Central MP Seat and ended up losing to Mohammed Nsereko even when had large crowds and plenty of momentum on the campaign trail. In 2016, he relocated to Kira only to be badly floored by Semujju Nganda. In 2021, he once again aspired for Kira but was sacrificed by Bobi Wine who gave the flag to rich man Kira Young aka Jimmy Lukwago.
This time round for 2026 he still wanted Kira but was signaled by Kavule that it was for George Musisi. He is understood to be so disappointed having got premonition that Gomba East has been ring-fenced for ex-Bukedde TV journalist Flavia Namulindwa.
Incumbent Godfrey Saasi (NUP) is equally bitter that Kavule is favouring the politically less sophisticated Flavia Namulindwa and he is already being eyed by Mathias Mpuuga’s DF for recruitment. The former LoP will be more than prepared to welcome Saazi who has the capability to team up with former Gomba Woman MP Nakato Kyabangi who is already moving mountains for DF there.
Having recently resigned from her State House job at the RDCs’ Secretariat, Kyabangi is eyeing Gomba Woman MP seat on DF ticket and she is one of those Mpuuga is hopeful will win and join Parliament under his DF platform.
In a related development, even Betty Sentamu Semanda, the Wine sister, is being sacrificed in Gomba and won’t be retaining the NUP ticket for Gomba Woman MP race as the same has been ring-fenced for former NRM youth Lord Councillor Aidah Nakuya. There is concern at Magere that Betty Sentamu’s liberalism, which recently saw her ally with some disgruntled NRMs to increase her victory chances, might create PR problems for NUP while alienating extremists among the foot soldiers’ fraternity.
A veteran Kampala street activist, Aidah Nakuya (who used to pray at Pastor Joseph Sserwadda’s Church in Ndeeba) is the one the EMC will be giving the NUP flag for Gomba Woman MP race where she will be facing off with Kyabangi and the incumbent Sylivia Nayebare of the ruling NRM.
