The Electoral Commission (EC) has wrapped up the nationwide Display of the National Voters’ Register, in what officials have called a critical step toward delivering credible elections in 2025/26.
After weeks of daily activity across over 38,000 polling stations, the exercise officially ended on May 15, 2025, in the majority of areas, with 620 polling stations granted additional time until May 27 due to technical delays that affected their start.
According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the Commission is proud of the milestone and confident that the register is now more accurate than ever. “We are grateful to all Ugandans who turned up to verify their details and help us clean the roll. This is not just a formality, but the foundation of electoral credibility,” he said.
The just-concluded display gave voters a chance to inspect their particulars and raise objections where needed, including identifying deceased persons, underage registrants, or duplicate names. It also featured lists of citizens verified by NIRA but not yet attached to polling stations.
With the display phase out of the way, the Commission is now moving into the next decisive stage, which is the Display of Recommended Inclusions and Deletions, as submitted by Parish and Ward Tribunals.
This follow-up phase begins soon, at all parish and ward headquarters. Here, the public will get to review lists of persons recommended for deletion or addition to the register, and raise any objections.
“These Tribunals are designed to be transparent, inclusive, and balanced,” Mucunguzi noted, adding that they include respected elders and individuals nominated in consultation with political parties.
The EC stressed that no one should be unfairly removed or added to the voters’ register without the community having a say. “This is your voters’ roll. You have a right to scrutinize it,” Mucunguzi emphasized.
Complaints, Corrections, and the Road Ahead
For those with unresolved issues, the Commission has advised reaching out directly to Returning Officers in respective districts, as provided for in Article 61(1)(f) of the Constitution and the Electoral Commission Act.
In the meantime, registered voters can continue verifying their status online via the EC portal: https://ec.or.ug/register.
Final Register in Sight — SIG Elections Up First
Once this verification phase concludes and corrections are made, the EC will compile and publish the final National Voters’ Register, which will be used in the 2025/2026 General Elections.
First on the ballot will be elections for Special Interest Groups (SIGs), namely Youths, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and Older Persons, expected to kick off in June 2025.
In a subtle but clear message to the public, the Commission said: “Elections do not begin at the ballot box, but with a clean, trusted register.”
With this phase concluded, the country inches closer to yet another defining moment in its democratic journey. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
