Two undisclosed staff members of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) have been dismissed in disgrace after being caught red-handed attempting to alter students’ examination results during the marking of the 2024 national exams.
The revelation came to light after UNEB Executive Director, Dan Odongo, confirmed the matter in a statement issued on Friday, noting that the pair had tried to manipulate data during the entry of results, but were immediately detected by UNEB’s internal security systems before any damage could be done.
According to today’s New Vision, sources close to the investigation show that one of the culprits was based in the data entry section, while the other worked in the chemicals and reagents department.
The matter gained public attention after a whistleblower accused UNEB staff of running a grade-trading cartel, claiming that some schools had for years paid to boost their students’ marks.
UNEB has since dismissed these long-running allegations, stating clearly that only two individuals were involved and that their plot failed.
It has also emerged that one of the fired staff had been repeatedly deployed to UACE marking centers, raising suspicion about his long-standing links with certain schools.
According to the whistleblower, he was approached by schools with offers to pay for grade alterations, an offer he allegedly accepted on multiple occasions.
A separate but connected fraud case was also uncovered during investigations, where a man, now in police custody, was using genuine index numbers and candidate data, reportedly leaked from within UNEB, to extort money from school heads, falsely claiming he could prevent result cancellations.
UNEB has so far revalidated all results from the centers linked to the dismissed officers and confirmed that no scores were actually tampered with.
