Uganda’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, has called for greater adoption of mediation and alternative dispute resolution methods to accelerate business processes.

Hon. Mao was speaking during a high-level visit by a delegation from Malawi at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau head offices in Kololo on Thursday.

“We encourage the Uganda Registration Services Bureau and legal practitioners to prioritize mediation as a viable solution for resolving disputes. This approach not only facilitates swifter resolution but also promotes a healthier business environment,” he said.

The Minister’s remarks come at a time when the country is seeking to improve its investment climate by reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks.

“By adopting mediation, businesses can avoid prolonged litigation and encourage constructive dialogue, which can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes,” he added.

The Malawian delegation, led by Justice Minister Hon. Titus Edward Songiso Mvalo, expressed admiration for Uganda’s systems.

“To say we are impressed is an understatement; we are overwhelmed. We are here to learn and copy from what we have seen here back to Malawi,” he stated.

Both ministers highlighted the importance of automation and technology in reducing corruption.

“Automation cuts out physical contact, which is good. Physical operations tempt people with bribes,” noted Minister Mvalo, who confirmed that lessons learned in Uganda would be implemented back home to support Malawi’s development pillars of agriculture, industrialization, and urbanization.

The visit was hosted by URSB Board Chair Ambassador Francis Butagira and Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho. Ambassador Butagira emphasized URSB’s significant reforms, saying, “We’ve formalized informal businesses across Uganda and are now conducting business with ease compared to the past.”

Ms. Kainobwisho highlighted URSB’s expanding influence: “We are proud of our business clinics that help entrepreneurs and our outreach to the diaspora. Who knew we would be able to do business clinics beyond borders?”

Earlier, Hon. Norbert Mao had taken the Malawian delegation on a tour of the Attorney General’s office and the Parliament of Uganda, where Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Anita Among, thanked the team for choosing Uganda as a benchmarking destination, which she remarked was a “show of faith.” (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
