Women in Insurance Network (WIN), Thursday February 20, marked its fifth anniversary with a grand convention at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala.

The event, held under the theme “Navigating the Leadership Landscape,” brought together key stakeholders in the insurance sector to celebrate achievements, discuss challenges, and launch new initiatives aimed at empowering women in the industry.

The convention was graced by the Third Deputy Prime Minister and Woman Member of Parliament for Mayuge District, Rt. Hon. Lukia Isanga Nakadama, as the guest of honor. In her remarks, she commended WIN for its resilience and growth over the years.

“It is not easy for an organization to survive five years, but WIN has stood strong. As women, you have shown great determination, and I urge you to keep going, knowing that you have a supportive partner in the NRM government,” Nakadama said.

She encouraged women to embrace leadership while maintaining a balance between their professional and personal lives. “Leadership does not mean neglecting yourself. Take care of your well-being even as you support others,” she advised.

WIN President Hajjat Afua Sebyala reflected on the organization’s journey since its launch in 2021 by 22 pioneering women. “I joined the insurance industry in 1992, and at that time, women were very few in this field. Like Martin Luther King had a dream for the U.S., I also had a dream for women in insurance in Uganda and Africa. Today, that dream has come true,” she stated.

Sebyala highlighted WIN’s achievements, including gaining both local and international recognition and actively engaging members at various levels.

She also announced the launch of a leadership and mentorship program aimed at nurturing more women leaders in the industry. To honor outstanding contributions, Sebyala presented the WIN Presidential Award of Excellence to selected women who have significantly supported the organization’s mission.

Alhaj Kaddunabi Ibrahim Lubega, the CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), expressed admiration for WIN’s impact on the sector. “I have attended many insurance conventions, but none have registered this level of attendance. Hajjat Sebyala has proven to be a pillar in this industry. She has mentored me and many others,” Kaddunabi said.

He emphasized the importance of gender diversity in leadership, noting that organizations with diverse leadership make better decisions and are more resilient. He also revealed that 30% of CEOs in the insurance industry are women, with a target to increase this to 50%.

Encouraging more women to join WIN, he urged the industry to create an enabling environment for women to thrive.

The convention saw the launch of two major initiatives. The Women in Insurance Master Class, officially launched by Minister Nakadama, aims to equip women with leadership skills and deepen their understanding of the insurance sector.

The Annual CSR on Maternal Health, in partnership with Kawempe National Referral Hospital, will focus on improving maternal healthcare by donating medical equipment and providing Mama Kits to expectant mothers. This initiative was launched by Hon.Nakadama, alongside Dr. Kazibwe Lawrence and Sister Silvia Kargire.

Rita Mutesi Kabayiza, Chairperson of the WIN Organizing Committee, encouraged women to embrace opportunities in the insurance sector. “As women achieve power, barriers follow. But together, we can break them and advance in this industry,” she said.

The event also featured a token of appreciation presented to Minister Nakadama by Alhaj Kaddunabi, recognizing her support for women in insurance.

With a strong foundation and a clear vision, WIN continues to shape the future of women in the insurance industry, ensuring their growth and leadership on both national and international platforms. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
